8年前（え？　もう8年？）、アメリカに住んでいた頃、コーヒーショップでタブレット型のPOSレジにチップ入力欄を見つけた時は衝撃でした。好きな額のチップを入力できたのですが、その端末ではついぞチップを払うことはありませんでした。コーヒーにチップを払うということが理解できなかったのです。

それがニューヨークでは50パーセントのチップをコーヒーショップで払うようになっているのですか。チップインフレです。

NHK朝ドラ「カムカムエブリバディ」ではるい編が終わり、ひなた編が始まりました。英語色が薄くなっていますが、このあと果たしてどう英語を絡めていくのでしょうか。

But now things are gradually getting back to normal - knock on wood.

幸運が続きますように、ということです。

私の例文です。

A: I passed the first stage of EIKEN Grade 1. Next will be the second stage, interview test next month.

B: Knock on wood.

★inegalitarian, （社会的・経済的に）不平等な[不公平な]

Some people found it distasteful and un-American - they thought it was feudal and inegalitarian.

Egalitarian 平等主義の、平等主義者

も覚えて居おきましょう。

サンデル教授の白熱授業でegalitarianは出てきました。

私の例文です。

The country is so inegalitarian that most people live in poverty.

★whirl a tablet screen around, タブレットの画面をぐるりと回す

The cashier at a coffee shop swipes my credit card and then whirls the tablet screen around to face me.

whirlは名詞で「渦巻き」「大騒ぎ」です。

私の例文です。

The boy was whirling the chair and was scolded by his mother.

★be fazed by, (通例否定文で)…によって(物が言えない・動けないくらい)困る

It was easier for high-end restaurants to do that, because their customers aren't fazed by higher prices.

私の例文です。

The boy wasn't fazed by the bullying.

★pick up the slack, 不足を補う

Until restaurant owners pay a living wage - a policy many say they can't afford - tipping will be there to pick up the slack.

私の辞書（オーレックス）では、

「ほかの人がしていたことを引き受ける」とあります。

私の例文です。

My coworker doesn't work so I have to pick up the slack.
