The Covid-19 pandemic has been an ordeal for everyone, causing widespread devastation, sickness, and loss. Yet, despite the immense challenges, the pandemic has taught us valuable lessons and provided some unexpected benefits. Here are some of the blessings of Covid-19:

mRNA Biotechnologies: Thanks to the rapid development of mRNA vaccines, we have opened up new possibilities for fighting many other diseases that have eluded our grasp, such as malaria, cancer, HIV, and flu.

Plant-based Meat and Cultured Meat: The pandemic led to the rapid development of meat alternatives and plant-based meat, which can potentially lessen the environmental impact of meat production and improve animal welfare and human health. Similarly, cultured meat is expected to become a viable alternative to traditional meat, though it may take some time before mass production.

Telecommuting and Flexible Work Schedules: Work has been transformed for the better, with telecommuting and flexible work schedules becoming the new default for many workers. People now have more flexibility and can avoid wasting time and energy on commutes, leading to improved quality of life and health outcomes.

Healthcare Innovations: Telemedicine has become increasingly popular during Covid-19, enabling people to be diagnosed online and get medications delivered to their doorstep. Additionally, Covid-19 has led to the rise of a smart world, with homes, cities, and farms becoming more innovative and efficient through technology.

Additionally, the pandemic has taught us new sanitary habits, such as Japanese shoe etiquette, which has made people feel cleaner and safer.

In conclusion, while Covid-19 has caused widespread suffering and loss, it has taught us valuable lessons and provided some unexpected benefits. By embracing the positive aspects of the pandemic, we can emerge from this ordeal more capable, compassionate, and better prepared for the future.

★elude someone's grasp,(人)が捕えようとしても捕らえることができない、(人)が把握[掌握]できない

"elude someone's grasp"は、何度も試みても理解したり、達成したり、捕まえたり、制御したりすることが難しい、もしくは不可能なことを意味します。Vignetteでは、ワクチンの開発が難航してきた病気を指しています。井出恭平が述べたように、mRNA技術の進歩により、このような病気のワクチン開発が可能になるかもしれないと期待されています。

★notoriously, 悪名をとどろかすほど、悪い評判が立っているように

"notoriously" は、「悪名高い、評判が悪い」という意味を持つ副詞です。Vignetteでは、「We may also finally get a new set of tools to fight cancer more effectively」の直前にある、「It's notoriously hard to vaccinate against.」という文に出てきます。これは、マラリアのような病気に対するワクチンの開発が困難であることを表しています。
