What is "Shinto 神道" in Japan

This is my personal article.

Most Japanese people are not conscious of our religious beliefs daily, but there are some cases which will remind us those beliefs do exist. For example, when a family member passes away, we usually hold the funeral in a Buddhist temple and build the graves inside.

Of course, we also know other religions, such as Islam, Christianity and Judaism, etc. But we have few opportunities to learn about them in Japan.

On the other hand, there is "Shintoism", which is unique in Japan.  Though I had countless opportunities to come into contact with it, I still feel mysterious and special when visiting the Shrine of "Shintoism". Almost all Japanese people consider Shinto is more than a religion; it is naturally there in the heart of every Japanese. There is evidence in the traditional events that Shintoism has been cherished for a long time.
"Shintoism" for me is the mindset of caring for people and the nature around me. I wish happiness for my family, friends, colleagues, and the land of Japan and all around the world when I go and pray in a Shinto shrine.

In Kamakura and Tokyo, you may have a lot of chance to feel and learn about Shintoism. They are waiting for you with open arms.
