Demystifying Career Guidance

I

n the current, digitally connected world, we are moving away from seeing work and life as two distinct components. We are coming to the realization that work is a subset of life and that the standard of one's work directly affects the measure of one's life in general.

Since we work for 70% of our adult lives, it is essential that we choose employment that we not only succeed at but also enjoy, something that provides value to us and makes our lives more fulfilling.

Career evolution

For a very long time, people thought of careers as one colossal accomplishment, a wide field or profession they decided to pursue. The concept of a career, however, has changed over time, and it is now thought of as a journey with two or three major arcs and several minor branches that develops over time. The idea of a profession has evolved, and people all around the world are switching careers more frequently. More talent than ever is drawn to multidisciplinary fields, and abilities are taking precedence over credentials. Technology is developing quickly, giving rise to new professions every day. And because there are so many options in this new environment, career advice is more important than ever.

Benefits of career counseling:

  • Benefits of career counseling include helping one to establish their roadmap, whether they are unsure of their future job prospects or have already made a choice.

  • It is independent of the board or curriculum; it enhances educational counselling and assists in making decisions about college or careers that are more informed.

  • Most schools don't include career counseling in their curricula, and parents and instructors may not be fully prepared. Consequently, hiring an expert is beneficial.

  • A career counsellor could assist with streamlining the decision-making process given the growing number of options available today and the quickly changing career routes.

Since career counseling is an ongoing process, it shouldn't be restricted to a few meetings. It's crucial that the counselor and parents agree on a schedule and road map that will change over time. Counselors, parents, kids, and instructors must continue exchanging notes; it shouldn't be done in a vacuum. Career counseling has the potential to make your child's life more satisfying and joyful if done properly.
