synopsis あらすじ

Travis Bickle (ROBERT DE NIRO) is a loner, an alienated,
uncommunicative Vietnam veteran. Because of his chronic insomnia,
he takes a job as a taxi driver on the night shift. He has little
contact with his passengers and occasionally joins another cabby,
Wizard (PETER BOYLE), in a cafeteria to discuss their related experiences.
One day, Travis catches sight of Betsy (CYBILL SHEPHERD), a
beautiful young campaign worker for George Palantine (LEONARD HARRIS),
a presidential candidate. His staring from the cab into the campaign
headquarters unnerves Betsy and when Tom (ALBERT BROOKS), a co-worker,
intervenes, Travis quickly drives away.
Travis acquires a gun, rationalizing that it's for self-protection against muggers and other criminal elements in his night world.

In order to get acquainted with Betsy, Travis appears at the
Palantine headquarters and volunteers his help. He isn't accepted,
but does manage to make a coffee date with a now interested but
cautious Betsy. She learns that Travis' politics are diametrically
opposed to the liberal Palantine, but eventually accepts his invitation
to a movie. She is shocked and angered when he takes her to a sleazy
42nd Street porno film theatre and bolts from the theatre, leaving
Travis bewildered by her reactions. His future attempts to see her
after that date are fruitless

Travis frustrations with Betsy and the parade of weird
passengers and incidents all contribute to his conviction that the
whole world is corrupt. He begins to buy more hand guns. His
fantasies become realities as he tells his parents in a letter that he
is on a secret mission for the government and is dating Betsy, a girl
of whom they can be proud.

One night Travis finds himself in the midst of a hold-up.
Because he has one of his guns ready for action, he shoots the hold-up
man and it earns him the nickname of "Killer" among his fellow cabbies.

He next becomes involved with a 14-year-old streetwalker,
Iris (JODIE FOSTER), and hopes to save her from her cruel procurer,
Sport (HARVEY, KEITEL), and an old man guarding her apartment, who are
among the many sinister people Travis wants to eliminate.

The biggest Palantine rally now takes place in Columbus
Circle. Travis is there, disguised with an unusual hair style.
works his way forward through the crowd and is spotted by the Secret
Service men who by now are familiar with his appearance. They chase
him through the crowd, but he escapes through the milling people and
drives off with screeching tires.

Travis becomes irrational and he goes on a wild shooting spree.
He kills Sport and a plainclothes policeman who is being "entertained"
by Iris. The newspapers hail Travis as a hero and Iris' parents send
him a letter of thanks for rescuing their daughter who now has returned
home. His fellow cabbies congratulate him on his new status. After
delivering a woman to her destination in his cab, she bids him good-
night and suggests that she might like to see him again. Travis smiles.
and pulls away in his cab into the night.
