(Eco-Friendly Condom)Friendly Jonny

Topic:In order to make our lives more convenient, human beings
have built a society that manufactures and consumes on a
grand scale and produces huge quantities of waste. The
resulting mountains of garbage have led to environmental
pollution and the destruction of natural habitats, critically
endangering the world in which we live.
Your challenge in this competition is to propose an
innovative enterprise that uses ongoing developments in
science and technology to bring about a dramatic
reduction in our current levels of waste in one, several or
all of these areas: manufacturing, distribution, marketing
and post-use waste disposal.

Executive summary:

Our advancements in technology are widely attributed to our need for a more convenient lifestyle. However, our desire to achieve a more comfortable lifestyle through technological advancements is causing significant environmental consequences. And one of the areas that are causing ecological damages is disposable, everyday use items such as paper, plastics, and rubber. Although some of these items are reusable, many are not, and they are often burned or buried in landfills. And burning or burying wastes often emit harmful chemicals or gases, which causes pollution, land degradation, global warming, etc.

One of the many daily items that end up in landfills is condoms. Condoms are often made of non-biodegradable substances such as non-biodegradable latex and synthetic materials such as polyurethane. Since the nature of condoms is not meant for reuse, they are one of the many items that end up in landfills. According to birthcontrol.com, 450,000,000 condoms are sold annually in the US alone, and considering the global production and usage, the damage to the environment is immeasurable. Although some alternative solutions such as vegan condoms and lambskin condoms do exist, they are often expensive or unreliable for the masses to buy.

Therefore, to combat this real-world problem, our team proposes an eco-friendly condom to solve this global issue. Our eco-friendly condom, Friendly Johnny, will be made from cellulose nanofiber, a plant-based material made from the cellulose extracts derived from plant pomaces. And unlike the conventional condoms on the market, the material is biodegradable, which means that it could be decomposed without much fear of environmental damage.

Our Mission:

Our idea of making environment-friendly condoms derives from my (Sou) beach cleaning experience in our residence in Okinawa - famous for the beautiful aqua blue seas. During a beach clean-up campaign that I participated in a year ago, I found many used condoms along the shores, which disgusted me. From this unpleasant experience, we came up with the idea of condoms made from biodegradable substances. Our product name, Friendly Johnny, is derived from the word "Friendly" for our eco-friendly goals, and "Johnny," which is slang for condoms. We hope to promote "Friendly Johnny" through our positive motives to achieve eco-friendly sex.

Product and Services:

Friendly Johnny is an eco-friendly condom made from cellulose nanofiber, a relatively new material made from cellulose extracted from plant pomaces such as wood, fruits, and vegetables; this makes the material relatively available and environmentally friendly. Moreover, the material is known for its durability and thinness, making the fabric perfect for making condoms. Also, the material is used in foods, health care products, cosmetics, and the medical field. This bio-diversity and viability make the product revolutionary, and scientists are carrying high expectations for products of this material.

Marketing:

This product will be targeted to all men and women on the planet.
