L’Odissea di Edward Bakst
by/di Pamela Goldman (traduzione in italiano al fondo pagina)
Over time, travel, reflection, and life’s challenges, I have resolved that ‘gravity’ and ‘reality’ are imagination’s greatest foes. They restrain and narrow our horizons, thus dulling our imagination. They entrap, leash, program, and brainwash us, gradually blinding us to alternate probabilities.
Hence, over time, I have evolved a philosophy unshackling ideation from predictability—an attitude inspiring imagination, and liberating my life, and is Gravity Free & Reality Independent.
Imagination is the Origin of All and
Everything! Without it there would be no art, science, magic, technology, invention, legends, fairy tales, mythologies, progress or civilization, at least as we know it. Without it we would still be hiding in dark and humid caves wowing in wonder at the sparkles in the skies high above. But, thanks to insatiable curiosity and restless courage of a few, we got out! And the sheep followed their shepherd, most of them, but far from all. In fact, judging by the state of humanity, societies, polarizing politics, greed and strive for power, too many are still basking in the dense darkness of ignorance, while awaiting their Messiah. And, whenever such emerges, and there have been throughout history, all autocratic, domineering, narcissistic, power starving and manipulative in blindingly mesmerizing to the hordes of sheep incapable of seeing the slaughterhouse awaiting them on a not-too-distant a horizon, they follow, waiving their flags, raising their arms while screaming in deafening rupturing ecstasy.
Why did I drift into this theme? Because, as it has been proven over and over, history repeats itself. As a yet another reincarnation of a Wandering Jew somewhat familiar with the ways it played out many times in the past, I am not attracted, eager or willing to see it replay yet again. It is too predictable and, since life is so short—which is what makes it precious—I’d rather explore that which I have not experienced, seen, or thought of before. And the reality to which we all wake up every morning, over and over, is monotonous as well as highly overrated.
For what we have grown to deem reality is in fact an upshot of a mind calibrated by laws and rules we imposed upon ourselves, dexterously crafting us over eons and eons. Whether it is called social order, customs, beliefs, religion, civilization, or survival, while growing and adapting to its mold most of us stop paying attention. We stop reflecting and analyzing, stop questioning and rebelling, and, above all, stop admiring the infinite artistry of life itself. The world surrounds us, whether here or out there in the infinite mystical and magical unknowns and most of us have stopped giving it due attention. Our visions gravitated to the ground instead of the space above.
Since, as a human—one who passionately thinks for himself, even if it hurts—I feel entombed in the rules of our existence as is. As a result, I unveiled a ‘Gravity Free & Reality Independent’ state of mind as an approach to perceiving the actual world. It reveals rare perspectives, horizons, dimensions and possibilities not thought of before. It liberates and inspires my imagination, igniting ideas and expressions manifested across eclectic artistic pursuits of art, photography, drawing, animation, conceptual designs imagining the impossible, Imagination Workshops or, simply, a way of being. While, I myself find it liberating it also positions me in deep conflict with the inescapable reality and gravity. This is the eternal struggle of a free mind. As an artist in search of ‘the meaning of life’ I am perpetually questioning human perception of what is real. Is it what we think we see or is it that we could, if we not just open our eyes but also our minds? I feel that my role as an artist is to share such beliefs and visions as to entice others with alternate perspectives for them to at least consider. Why? Because such could liberate us from the viewpoints within which we have grown, often unconsciously, entrapped. As the grains of precious time fall by, unforgiving and irreversibly, I stubbornly persist in distilling the gist of my life’s work. Perusing and discovering nature’s all-encompassing artistry, revealing infinite spaces and dimensions which, to me, conjure micro and macro universes. Revealed perhaps through my own wishful thinking, or desire for alternate prospects. Yet, if I am right—and this is a BIG if—maybe they are parallel to the ones we exist in, even if only concocted in my own imagination? Whatever the truth might be, to me, life without such ideas, questions, reflections, investigation, explorations, wanderings or challenges, is not worth living.
