Story

Steampunk Explorer is having a falling out with his gang. He’s walking through the city at sunset thinking about them, his love for them, the many experiences they’ve had, and how, recently, they seem to be using their close relationship to sabotage him.

SE is walking through the streets of a city at sunset. He is on his way to a meeting with his dear friends, the members of his gang. The city feels odd to him, not comfortable and welcoming.

SE thinks about his relationship with his gang - he would love to resolve the issues they have. but every doorway he passes reminds him that they have closed more and more doors to him as he has tried to reach out.

SE is afraid, which is unusual for him. He thinks that, based on past experience, he will be misunderstood. He’s trying to figure out an approach to the conversation. If his gang says something true that gets him angry, should he show it, or should he hide his feelings so that he’s able to continue the conversation? He thinks he won’t be able to fully hide his feelings. He’s hurt because he never had to do that before with his gang.

SE has experienced the kind of conversational indirectness that drives him crazy. When his gang is indirect, they manage to make it sound like he’s the one with the problem. He doesn’t think he is. He thinks they are making the conversation difficult on purpose. That makes them fools, in his estimation. He resolves that he needs to stand up for the truth and being honest, no matter what they say. Hopefully their foolishness is can be explained and is temporary.
