About “Yamakoshi Art”

Hello, my name is Aotakana. I have been creating illustrations of landscapes and people, posting them on Instagram and exhibiting them at events in Japan and abroad.

This year, in addition to posting on SNS and participating in exhibitions, I wanted to try something new and have been experimenting with a number of things. One of the things that came out of this process is "Yamakoshi Art," which I will introduce here.

【1】What is Yamakoshi Art?

The first Yamakoshi NFT

I have recently started a new series of artworks based on the Yamakoshi region of Niigata Prefecture.
I try to express the unique natural beauty and atmosphere of Yamakoshi, and create paintings that allow each viewer to imagine their own story.
The method and direction of creating the atmosphere of the work is similar to other landscape works, but this series of works is based on local photos and videos - stories about the surrounding area - with the help of "Yamakoshi Digital Villagers".
The finished works will be donated to the Yamakoshi area in various forms, and will be exhibited and sold as NFT art (see below) in the digital space.(I donated NFT art of the left one on 7/2(JST))
By the way, I wonder if any of you are familiar with the term "Yamakoshi Digital Villagers" that I mentioned above. Actually, I myself am a "Yamakoshi Digital Villager.

【2】 "Yamakoshi Digital Villagers" and "NishikigoiNFT

My NishikigoiNFT

Yamakoshi Digital Villagers" are those who possess "NishikigoiNFT".

NishikigoiNFT" (hereafter NishikigoiNFT) is "NFT art" published by a team led by a representative of "Yamakoshi Residents' Council". *1

NFT art" is one of the applications of "NFT," a digital certificate (token) utilizing blockchain technology, in which information on the storage of digital art data is tied to the NFT. *2
Unlike a physical work of art, NFT art is an intangible object, and thus, ownership of the art itself cannot be claimed by possessing NFT art.
On the other hand, there are some advantages, such as the fact that there are no physical restrictions, which makes it easier to collect, and the fact that you can receive benefits as an NFT purchaser based on the data associated with the NFT. *3
Nishikigoi NFT is the application of such "NFT art" as an "electronic certificate of residence.

[2] Yamakoshi Residents' Council and the NFT Project

The project to gather "Yamakoshi Digital Villagers" was launched mainly by the Yamakoshi Residents' Council. Originally, this organization was established "in order for the residents themselves to think about a better future vision for the region and take action to realize it in the wake of the reconstruction from the Chuetsu Earthquake and the merging of municipalities.
However, the current population of the Yamakoshi area is only 800, and the problem of a declining population has not been solved.
With this in mind, a team led by Mr. Takeuchi, the representative of Yamakoshi Residents' Council, started a new project, focusing on blockchain technology, with a desire to "add not only people from Yamakoshi but also sympathizers from outside and build a new Yamakoshi together like a community. *5
With this in mind, a team led by Takeuchi san, the representative of Yamakoshi Residents' Council, started a new project focusing on blockchain technology.
This is the "NishikigoiNFT" project to collect "Yamakoshi Digital Villagers" by issuing NFT art, which serves as an electronic certificate of residence.

[3]The activities of Yamakoshi Digital Villagers

Yamakoshi Digital Villagers" mainly use discord as a place for "village meetings" to discuss and take action on various projects.
For example, the "Virtual Yamakoshi Village Project" is a project to create a new community connecting digital villagers and real Yamakoshi residents by building Yamakoshi Village on a VR space. Most recently, the project team visited the real Yamakoshi, took photos and 3D scans that will be used as materials for the world and 3d models, and then discussed how to create a virtual Yamakoshi Village on discord and NeosVR (one of VRSNS). *6

There are also many people who have visited Yamakoshi for the first time after becoming digital villagers and share the wonderful things about Yamakoshi. The people who originally lived in Yamakoshi have also warmly welcomed the "homecoming" of Yamakoshi Digital Villagers.

【3】 After I became a digital villager

I originally bought Nishikigoi NFT because I was interested in the artwork using Nishikigoi as a motif, which was born in Yamakoshi, as well as the activities of the Digital Villagers.
Then, as I began to actually read about the activities of the digital villagers every day, I decided that I wanted to contribute something, too, and proposed the "Yamakoshi Art" project.
When I proposed this somewhat, the digital villagers immediately offered their opinions and suggestions. As mentioned above, the reference materials for the artwork were photos and videos taken by the digital villagers in the area. Some of them even took new videos for the project.
It took only two weeks from the time I became a digital villager to the time I started working on Yamakoshi Art. This is how enthusiastic the digital villagers were.
Even more gratifying, the project was featured as a May initiative on the official NishikigoiNFT Twitter feed.

At this point, we are still in the process of trial and error and there are many issues to be addressed, but I would like to contribute to the Yamakoshi region as one of the Yamakoshi Digital Villagers, with the "Yamakoshi Art" project as my main focus.

【4】"Yamakoshi Art" future plans

We would like to have more opportunities to present the goodness of Yamakoshi through art at real Yamakoshi and other galleries in the future. Also, as mentioned in [1], we are planning to sell "NFT Art" (tokens with artwork data) of Yamakoshi art. We will post an article explaining this again. Due to the many issues with the blockchain technology itself, there is a possibility that we may take some time, but we look forward to your continued support.
