The long good bye

32年間愛用したバーバリーのロング・トレンチに別れを告げました。前にも書いたけど、2回直して着ていました。

北緯51度のロンドンでは中にインナーダウンを重ね、よく働いてくれました。しかし先日、小綺麗な人しか歩いていないエリアに行って、ふと気がついてしまったのです。「あっ、このコート、疲れ果ててる！」と。同じ布がもう手に入らないのでベルトとエリは直せず、それがとっくに限界を迎えていたのです。

ロンドンの人は基本的に自他の身なりに無関心です。タイトなレギンスやノーブラは珍しいことではないし、毛の生えたお尻が半分くらいコンニチワしているダルダルのジャージのおじさんとかもよくいます。

日本人的にはちょっとびっくりだけど、ロンドンではそれは普通。私もどっちかというと、普段はそれに馴染んでしまっています。

しかしだからって油断してその仲間に入りきってはダメだなと思いました。当前ながら、ちゃんとしたエリアに行けば皆がちゃんとした身なりをしているのです。「ちゃんとしている」ことにおいて定評のある日本人のはしくれとして、モザイクのようなロンドンの街で、どこを歩いていても最低限清潔げな身だしなみはだいじにしなきゃと思いました。

それでやっと、手放す決意がつきました。

そして今、似たやつをオンラインショップでチェックしたらびっくり。昔の倍以上の価格になっているよ。ロンドンに来てから自分が着る一品にかけるお金としては、最大のお支払いになりそうだよ。

しかしそれでも、数十年着られるいいものであることがわかっているから。もしかしたら残りの人生ずっと使えるし、娘が背が高くなったら譲ることもできるから。

次の冬が来る前に買うと思います。バーバリーの、ロングトレンチ。

After 32 wonderful years, my trusty Burberry trench coat has finally retired.

As I noted before, I had it repaired twice. The belt and collar could not be mended because the same fabric was no longer available.

In London's harsh winter, the coat served me admirably as the layered over with an inner down jacket. However, when I was strolling through a posh street in Mayfair, I was suddenly struck by a flash of the reality: "Oh no, this is too tired!"

In London, most people are generally indifferent to their own and others' appearances. Tell you the truth, I got used to the loose atmosphere.

In this city of diversity, you will encounter a wide variety of casual style. Tight leggings or No-Bra are not special. You often see one clad in baggy sweatpants with their buts half peeping. Those are totally Okay in London, but a bit too stimulating for Japanese sense.

However, it goes without saying that, even in London, there are some different areas where everyone is correctly dressed. As one of the 'Tidy' Japanese, I would like to be dressed at least objectively clean wherever walking through this mosaic-like city.

So I thanked and farewelled to my old good coat. Finally.

Now, I am facing the reality that the price of the similar Burberry coat has been doubled over the years. Well…it's an investment piece that will likely last for decades. It's a qualified item that I see myself wearing for years to come, or perhaps even pass on to my daughter when she get taller than me.
