駿府城公園マロニエ園には青島ミカン発見者の青島平十翁を記念する石碑があります。青島ミカンは温州ミカンの一種。温州ミカンは日本で一番人気のある柑橘類の果物です。
静岡はミカンの産地。せっかくですからその辺りの知識を整とんしてみましょう。

Among citrus fruits harvested in Japan, the biggest volume is ‘unshu mikan’ or citrus unshiu.
日本で収穫される柑橘類の中で最も収穫量が多いのは「温州ミカン」です。
It shares about 70%
およそ70%を占めます。
Unshiu is a land name, Wenzhou, which is located in Zhejiang province in the People's Republic of China.
温州は地名で、中華人民共和国、浙江省にあります。
Citrus unshiu found in Nagashima, Kagoshima prefecture (Satsuma) was a mutated variety, so there is no connection with Wenzhou.
鹿児島県（薩摩）の長島で発見された温州ミカンは変異種です。ですから、温州とは関係がありません。
However, Nagashima has a natural good port and people living in Nagashima presumably had a big respect toward Wenzhou, which was the big production site of mandarin oranges in China.
しかし、長島には自然の良港があり、長島の人々は中国におけるミカンの一大生産地であった温州に対して多大な敬意を持っていたのでしょう。
It is considered that the local people named these oranges ‘Unshu mikan’, or Citrus unshiu.
その地元の人々がこのみかんを「温州ミカン」と名付けたと考えられています。
By the way, in English, citrus unshiu is called Satsuma or Satsuma orange because it was first exported from Satsuma.
ところで、英語では温州ミカンを「サツマ」もしくは「サツマオレンジ」と呼ぶのですが、薩摩から最初に輸出されたからです。
In Japan, mandarin oranges are equivalent to citrus unshiu.
日本ではみかんと言えば、温州ミカンと同じなのです。
The variety is so wide, and there are 115 according to statistics.
品種は多く、統計では115あります。
In Shizuoka, the most popular variety of citrus unshiu is ‘Aoshima Unshiu’, which is friendly called ‘Aoshima mikan’.
静岡で 温州ミカンの中で最も人気のある品種は「青島温州」で、親しみを込めて「青島ミカン」と呼ばれています。
Aoshima Unshiu was found in Fukudagaya, Aoi Ward, Shizuoka City around 1935.
青島温州は静岡市葵区福田ヶ谷で1935年頃見つかりました。
The farmer in the field was Aoshima Heiju and he found the mutated orange big and sweet.
その畑の農家が青島平十さんで、彼は変異したミカンが大きく、甘いことを見つけました。
In addition, the fruit could be preserved for a long time.
しかも、その実は長く日持ちしました。
The new variety was named after Mr. Aoshima and is called Aoshima mikan.
その新しい品種は青島さんにちなんで名づけられ、青島ミカンと呼ばれます。
Aoshima mikan has not only a sweet, delicious taste but also a long shelf life.
青島ミカンは甘いだけでなく、保存性にも優れています。
Currently, Aoshima Mikan accounts for over 50% of the citrus unshiu fields in Shizuoka Prefecture.
現在、青島ミカンは静岡県での温州ミカンの栽培面積の50%以上を占めます。
On November 20, 2015, this stone monument was erected in Sumpu Castle Park to commemorate Mr. Aoshima's great contribution to the field.
2015年11月20日に、この石碑が青島氏のこの分野における偉大な功績を記念するために立てられました。

Even after the passing of Mr. Aoshima, the original tree of Aoshima mikan was passed down in the Aoshima family.
青島氏亡き後も、青島ミカンの原木が青島家により引き継がれました。
In Shizuoka City, Aoshima mikan is harvested from late November to the middle of December.
静岡市では、青島ミカンは11月下旬から12月半ばに収穫されます。
Once harvested, the fruits are stored to make them taste softer and sweeter.
いったん収穫されてから、味をまろやかに甘くするために実を保管します。
And then the shipping starts in the middle of December.
そして12月の半ばから出荷されます。
