【～連載～静岡の歴史を学ぼう202】Yakata-machi 屋形町

ご存じでしたか？

「まち」がつく地区、町内は格が高かったことを。「まち」がつくとその町内は一般的に武家地で、「ちょう」がつく町内は「町人地」でした。（一部、その法則と違う町内もありますので、研究を致します）それをまさに示すような町名について見てみます。実際に江戸時代、この地区には駿府町奉行所の与力が住んでいました。

屋形町

Yakata-machi is located between Togiya-cho (It means a sword sharpeners' district ) and Daiku-cho (It means a carpenters' district) districts.

屋形町は研屋町（研ぎ師の町内を意味）と大工町（大工の町内を意味）の間にあります。

In general, districts with the term ‘machi’ had a higher rank.

概して、「まち」という言葉がつく町内は高い格がありました。

概して「まち」がつくと武家地を意味します。

一方、「ちょう」がつくと、町人地を指しました。

‘Yakata’ literally means palace or mansion.

「やかた」は文字通り、お屋敷を意味します。

The origin of this district is not clearly specified, but there are mainly three theories about its origin.

この地区の起源ははっきりを特定されていませんが、おもに三つの説があります。

First, it is considered that this location was one of the Imagawa clan’s palaces under their rule before the Edo period.

第一に、この場所には江戸時代の前、今川氏の支配下で今川氏の屋敷の一つがあったと思われます。

あるならば今川氏の中の誰かのお屋敷だと思われます。

Another theory is that the Imagawa clan settled their nobleman relatives who escaped from Kyoto due to the Onin War from 1467 to 1477.

もう一つの説は、1467年から1477年にかけての応仁の乱により京都から追われた公家の親戚たちを住まわせたことです。

A succession dispute between the shogun in the Muromachi military government in Kyoto caused the Onin War.

京都での室町幕府の将軍を巡る後継者争いが応仁の乱を引き起こしました。

This war resulted in the unfolding of the Civil War period in Japan.

この乱をきっかけに、日本の戦国時代が始まりました。

Kyoto was devastated, and it is thought that many noblemen evacuated to Sumpu by relying on the Imagawa clan.

京都は荒廃し、多くの公家たちが今川氏を頼って駿府に避難したと考えられます。

The Imagawa clan is well-known historically as a wealthy family with great connections in Kyoto.

今川氏は歴史的に京都と強いつながりのある裕福な一家としてよく知られていました。

The family was originally from Kyoto.

今川家は元々京都出身でした。

And the final theory was that this location was filled with high-ranking samurai　mansions in the Edo period and that no commoner's house could be seen.

そして最後の説は、この場所には江戸時代、高い位の武士（与力）の屋敷があるというもので、ですから町人の家は見られませんでした。

This fact is supported by historical book series titled ‘Surugaki’ and ‘Sunkoku-Zasshi’.

この事実は「駿河記」と「駿国雑志」という歴史書により示されています。

However, the origin of the district cannot be clarified.

しかし、地区の起源を明らかにすることは出来ません。
