#02 green horror

NO FOOD, NO LIFE.
Whatever kinds of animals and plants would ask for food
when they are hungry.
When they cannot get anything to eat, 
they will have to move to where they can eat.
When they can get nothing wherever they move,
they will be able to live no more life.

If there were to be nothing to eat in Japan,
where would Japanese people move?
If there were to be nothing to eat on the Earth…

One night, one piece of coal black meteorite, a diameter of about one meter, fell on the garden in front of a mansion house in Machida city, a suburb of TOKIO, without either light or sound. 
The next morning, the resident woman found the strange thing, and fearfully approached it.
She tried kicking it and found it not hard but soft like jelly.
The next morning but one,  a young hope of biological engineering in T University, SHIGURO returned to Japan from South America, where he had been looking into a weird phenomenon.

He was studying biology in a graduate school at T Univ.
And originally so interested in weird phenomena
that he was allowed to come in and out The Youth club room.
Immediately SHIGURO returned to Japan,
before going home he turned up at The Youth hideout
in order to inform them of the strange case.
A lot of villages of the Amazon basin
had been suddenly reduced to desert without any humans and animals. 
As a result of his research over a few months,
he  only found marks left to show
that some plant unknown on our planet suddenly multiplied
and suddenly became extinct over the area. 

Professor KIRIYA was listening curiously to SHIGURO.
After a while, KIRIYA said,
"We cannot stop talking.  I'm very sorry to have held you up so long. 
Your wife must be eagerly looking forward to meeting you."
"I'd appreciate your kindness."
"MOROBOSHI, drive him home, please."

He went with SHIGURO, of course by yellow Beetle.
Arriving at the SHIGURO residence,
MOROBOSHI saw the huge stone on the garden,
which he found very hard to the touch like a diamond.
SHIGURO asked his wife and mother, who met him at the door.
His wife answered that it began lying two days before.

"We'll have the police remove it," he said.
MOROBOSHI wore the red glasses
and tried to see the strange stone, but in vain.
He had seen the like before.

"This must be @nite 220. 
Even so, why should such a thing be on such a place?"

At the same night, a drunken businessman got off the last Odakyu Line
at Tsurukawa Station and began to walk home, Tsurukawa Danchi.
Tottering on his way home,  he was attacked by something.
Taken to Hospital attached to T University, where YURI worked as a doctor, the patient got worse and worse in condition. 
Astoundingly, his whole body got covered
with a countless number of queer plants gradually and rapidly.
In the end, he turned into a botanical humanoid, YURI reported.
Moreover, green horror continued.

The same kind of cases happened around Shinkoji, Machida the
following night and around Kanai-cho, Machida the next but one.
So, the city announced a curfew
so that the citizens would not go out at night.

Alien YR photosynthesized (kou-gousei) in the green hill
around Noduta, Machida on sunny days,
while it attacked humans at night or in rainy days.
It absorbed cytoplasm (saibou-shitsu) from human cells
and inoculated human bodies 
with its own YoRyokuso(YR), or chlorophyll to built a cell wall
around each human cell, so that the human became a plant.
The plant came to attack other humans in order to copy itself.

Almost no people usually were to be seen around the area,
but not a single person especially that night.
As a result, alien YR inevitably directed its attack to those at hand.

The odd stone was carried to T Univ and examined by KIRIYA.
However, it was too hard even for a diamond crusher to damage a single scar.

Since dangerous incidents continued coming about,
MOROBOSHI was patrolling by yellow Beetle, dropping in on SHIGURO.
His mother said,
"Oh Mr. MOROBOSHI, just in time!  Please come and see."

He found another @nite 220 in the storage under the kitchen sink,
about thirty centimeters in diameter.

Mr. and Mrs. SHIGURO on a trip to Kinugawa Onsen
were about to get on a private compartment of Express SPACIA
at Asakusa Station.
SHIGURO seated himself at the window and his wife Midori sat next to him.

MOROBOSHI hammered the MYSTERIOUS hard stone with all their strength.
At the same time that the small stone cracked,
the big stone in T Univ facility also cracked.
Soon MOROBOSHI received a phone call from T Univ.
AMABE said to him, "Don't be amazed, MOROBOSHI. 
The rock has a person in it."

Mr. SHIGURO on the train, seeing the scenery out of the wide window,
was thinking about the relation between the cases in South America
and the incidents in Machida, TOKIO.
Midori, his wife, was peeling a mandarin orange. 
When their train passed Kita-senju, its compartment got filled with sunshine.
Suddenly, He felt stifling, short of oxygen.
Then Midori handed in him the fruit
and he found her hand some green plants. screaming GYAAA!

MOROBOSHI said, "Person?  Is it Mr. SHIGURO?"
"No, it's MRS. SHIGURO!" cried AMABE.
Mr. SHIGURO's mother told MOROBOSHI
that they were on the way to Kinugawa.
He took the red glasses out of his inside pocket.

Express SPACIA made an emergency stop at Kasukabe Station
and the passengers rushed at the doors.
Alien YR was quivering its way to the regular car,
with its vines like tentacles creeping and winding around a few passengers.

The moment, a flash.

The vines holding some preys were cut and set them free.
"Run!  Run away!" shouted a young man with red glasses.

A flash again.

The monster's body was split in two.
A beam from his forehead hit the thing, which changed into some sand.
It took less than one second.

The problem was solved.
SHIGURO and MOROBOSHI were walking toward Route 16,
informing KIRIYA of the situation.
The small stone was an electrical brain with positioning device,
which reflected Midori's figure to YR itself.
"Was alien YR to blame for the South America desertification?"
No idea, but it would not be strange now
even if anything happened in the universe.

The Youth assembled.
They came by HAWK the youth 1 and 3,
both of which AMABE had secretly developed.
HAWK 1 was a little larger than 3
The machines could run on the land and fly in the sky.
KIRIYA asked MOROBOSHI to take Mr. and Mrs. SHIGURO
to Kinugawa Onsen by HAWK 3.

"YES HOPE (Roger)!"

"TOKIO almost became desert, or SABAKU.  This is true TOKIO SABAKU,"
Nobody heard AMABE's joke and got into HAWK 1 at the very end.

"By the way, how could MOROBOSHI kun come to Kasukabe so early?"
YURI whispered, but the other members seemed not to listen to her.
