An Essay on learning a language

 What makes you learn a foreign language? I have begun to study English since I was a junior high school student. English is a compulsory subject, but I have never studied it against my will. Learning one new English word after another was, is, and will be sure to be forever a lot of fun. Memorizing a new word is not only a lot of fun, but also kind of consolation to me. 

 Some people say they study English for the purpose of its practical use and that English without business conversations is of little importance. I, however, cannot keep up with their notions concerning English. 

 In my opinion, pure curiosity is the greatest motivator. When you read an English book, you felt comfortable. Is such an experience lacking in common sense? No, definitely not. 

 What is "practical use?" Can you explain what it means to others? 
 
 It may safely be said that even if you have no opportunities to talk with foreigners, English has some practical use if you feel comfortable when you read a book written in English. 

 When we use the word communication, we tend to only think of living people. But through reading books written by people who no longer exist in this world, we can communicate with the dead. This world is not only made up of the living, but also of the dead. To be able to communicate with the dead, that is one of the privileges only human beings are allowed to enjoy.

今回の記事は、昨日の池辰彦さんの記事に触発されて書きました。
「やる気」の維持はタスクの最小化。
英語を学習する上でも、応用できる考え方だと思いました。
「話すこと」「書くこと」「聞くこと」「読むこと」は、一般に語学の４技能だと言われています。一度にすべてをマスターするのは無理ですね。

人によって、どれを重視するかは変わってもいい。

仕事などで「話す」機会が多いならば、「話す」ことに特化する。とりあえず「話す」の中でも、仕事に直接関係のある語彙を覚えることから始める。

あるいは「話す」機会がないのなら、無理に英会話する必要はないかもしれません。SNSなどで発信することが目的ならば、「書くこと」に特化する。

読書することが目的ならば、「読むこと」に特化する。

とりあえず、漠然とした「やる気」を細分化して、どのようなタスクを積み上げていったらよいか？、と考えることは有意義だと思いました。
