(訳注)
① カンタベリー物語で粉屋が語る「寝取られた大工」のセリフ。"An housbonde shal nat been inquisityf　Of Goddes pryvetee, nor of his wyf.(夫は女神の秘密を知りたがってはならず、妻についても詮索してはいけない)"

②「不思議の国のアリス」には、裁判で有罪だと決めつける場面があります。“The trial cannot proceed until all have been found guilty.(全員有罪と決まるまで、裁判は進行できないのさ)”

③ ヴェスタの巫女(ウェスタの処女)は、実際には１６人ではありません。「１６」は、この二人が若い未熟なカップルであることを示唆している可能性があります。

④ we were at sea → 途方に暮れて。seasick などの言葉とともに、航海中の難破船に乗っているような表現を重ね合わせています。

⑤ looking glass →「トランプ」と「鏡」で、アリスからの引用だと私たちに気付かせてくれます。「鏡の中で起きたことは、現実とは逆である」というジョークに、彼女を誘っています。

⑥ mermaid → マーメイドには、船乗りをおびき寄せる能力があります。つまり、この物語の男性は「船乗り」であり、休暇で母国の港に上陸しています。人魚は船を沈没させますが、屋根が吹き飛ぶ描写はこのためです。つまり人魚とは、主人公から見たこの女性の姿です。

and likewise if behind is in front

My mouth by then like cardboard
seemed to slip straight through my head

So we crash-dived straightway quickly
and attacked the ocean bed
