【英語で読書感想文】The Vegetarian by Hang Kang ハン・ガン『菜食主義者』

In my opinion, Hang Kang is one the best contemporary authors of our generation. When I read the first few sentences of this book, I knew that I definitely would love the story and the author!
The Vegetarian is divided into 3 sections and it follows a Korean woman named Yeong-hye. One day she suddenly said that she was not going to eat meat anymore. Her decision upset her family especially her husband, who is the narrator of the first section of the book. The husband liked to live a mediocre life so her decision irritated him. The second section is narrated by Yeong-hye’s brother-in-low who was obsessed with her in perverted way, and the third section was told in the third person perspective focusing on her sister who cared for Yeong-hye. Everyone did not understand why Yeong-hye strongly refused to eat meat and put pressure on her. Yeong-hye’s physical and mental health conditions were gradually deteriorating but there was no section where she told her narrative so we cannot know why she acted this way.
The ending of the story is surreal and symbolic. Even after the story ended, it stayed in me for a long time and I kept thinking about it. Hang Kang’s writing is sharp and I really love it. Despite the title, this is not about vegetarianism itself at all but obsession, violence, peer pressure, sexual perversion and patriarchal society.
