こんにちは。ペーパーガイドのGerryです。

日本を訪れた外国人観光客の数がコロナ前の水準に戻りつつあるそうですね。新幹線の駅には大きな荷物を担いだ外国からの観光客の皆さんが大勢いらっしゃいます。Japan Rail Passを使うと、のぞみとみずほを除く新幹線など、JR各社の列車に乗り放題になりますからね。時間に正確な日本の列車は外国人旅行客の皆さんを驚かせてるんだろうなぁ。のぞみのような超特急が分刻みのスケジュールで運行されているのって、かなりびっくりですよね。

さて、今回も日本各地の都市を英語で説明します。

4 日本の観光地

大阪

250万人の人口を有し、大阪は日本で３番目に大きく、また２番目に重要な都市である。16世紀に豊臣秀吉が城を建てるのにこの地を選んだ。もし、徳川家康が秀吉の死後、豊臣の世を終わらせていなかったら、大阪は日本の首都になっていたかもしれないが、家康は政府を遠く江戸へ移すことになった。
大阪は商人の街として知られ、また食い倒れの街としても有名である。多くの観光客がショッピングやグルメを楽しみに大阪にやってくる。

Osaka
With a population of 2.5 million, Osaka is Japan's third largest and second most important city. In the 16th century, Toyotomi Hideyoshi chose Osaka
as the location for his castle. The city may've become Japan's capital if Tokugawa Ieyasu had not terminated the Toyotomi lineage after Hideyoshi's death. But he moved his government to distant Edo.
Osaka is known as a center of commerce and as a gourmet heaven. It attracts a lot of tourists who want to enjoy shopping as well as eating out.

名古屋

200万人以上の人口を有し、名古屋は日本で４番目に人口の多い都市である。名古屋は尾張藩、江戸時代の徳川の御三家の一つ、の城下町として栄えてきた。残念ながら街のほとんどは歴史的建造物もろとも1945年の空襲で破壊されてしまった。現在、名古屋城は元の木造建築に戻すべく修復作業が行われている。

Nagoya
With over two million inhabitants, Nagoya is Japan's forth most populated city. Nagoya developed as the castle town of the Owari, one of the three branches of the ruling Tokugawa family during the Edo Period. Unfortunately much of the city, including most of its historic buildings, was destroyed in the air raids of 1945. Nagoya's government has decided to rebuild the Nagoya Castle to retrieve its original wooden structure.

福岡

福岡は九州最大の都市で、日本の十代都市のうちの一つである。アジア大陸に近いこともあって（東京よりソウルの方が近い）福岡は何世紀にもわたって重要な港町となっていた。また13世紀には蒙古の侵略の拠点として選ばれた。

Fukuoka 
Fukuoka is Kyushu's largest and one of Japan's ten most populated cities. Because of it closeness to the Asian mainland (closer to Seoul than to Tokyo), Fukuoka has been an important harbor city for many centuries and was chosen by the Mongol invasion forces as their landing points in the 13th century.

京都

京都はかつて日本の首都であり、1000年以上にわたって朝廷が置かれた地であった、本州中央に位置する京都には史跡や歴史的遺産が数多くある。京都を訪れる観光客は毎年数千万人にのぼる。秋の紅葉は観光客にとってベストシーズンであり、京都内には金閣寺や二条城など、17ヶ所もの世界遺産がある。

Kyoto
Kyoto was the capital of Japan and home of the Imperial Court for over 1000 years. Located in central Honshu, the city is rich in historical sites and relics. Kyoto attracts tens of millions of visitors every year. Autumn is the best season for the tourists to enjoy the beautiful leaves which turn red beautifully. 
The 17 properties of the World Heritage Sites are located in Kyoto prefecture including Kinrakuji temple, or Golden Pavilion and Nijojo Castle.

奈良

奈良はかつての日本の首都であった。ここには奈良公園や、大仏がある東大寺をはじめ数多くの史跡があり、今でも落ち着いた伝統的な雰囲気が漂っている。
東大寺を訪れる旅行者は、隣接する奈良公園で鹿を見ることができる。これらの鹿は鹿せんべい欲しさに頭を下げるが、時には凶暴になるので注意が必要である。

Nara
Nara used to be an ancient capital of Japan. It has many historical places including Nara Park and Todaiji temple, in which a large statue of Buddha is located. The city still remains in a serene traditional atmosphere.
The temple visitors will encounter some deer begging for shika-senbei, or special crackers for deer, in the adjacent Nara Park. Sometimes these deer become so greedy that we need to be very careful .

金沢

江戸の時代、金沢は前田藩のお膝元であり、徳川に次ぐ勢力を得ていた。第2次世界大戦中は空襲を逃れた２番目に大きな都市であった。そのため長町の武家屋敷跡や茶屋街のような古い城下町の一部が大変いい状態でそのまま残っている。北陸新幹線のおかげで都心からのアクセスが便利になった。

Kanazawa 
During the Edo Period, Kanazawa served as the seat of the Maeda Clan, the second most powerful feudal clan after Tokugawa.
During the WWII, Kanazawa was Japan's second largest city to fortunately escape destruction by air raids. Thanks to this, parts of old Nagamachi samurai district and Chaya entertainment districts have survived in pretty good condition.
The Hokuriku shinkansen allows the tourists to have an easy access from Tokyo.
