『 Terje Rypdal / Terja Rypdal 』

昨日レコード棚を整理していたら懐かしいアルバムが出てきて一枚は先述のJan の『Salt』であるがもう一枚はTerje Rypdalの本アルバムである。この二枚はペアのように当時の私には感じられたのであろう、隣同士にレコード棚に入っていた。本盤は当時Jan Garbarekのクインテットに所属していたTerjaの『ECM』レーベル初リーダー作品である。メンバーはJanのアルバムのクインテットにヴォイスのInger Lise Rypdal,電気ピアノのTom Halversen,電気ピアノのBjornar Anderesenが加わった編成となっている。主要曲と言って良いA1『Keep It Like That - Tight』はMilesの『Jack Johnson』と『Bitches Blew』の影響下にある曲想でまたB1『Electric Fantasy』は明らかにWether Reportのファーストアルバムの影響下にあるコズミックな曲想であると思う。勿論そのままではなくTerjeの北欧的美意識と独創性が働いていてより知的で構成的な作品とはなっている。A2『Rainbow』はコズミックなサウンドの実験、また同じくB2『Lontango Ⅱ』も打楽器を用いたサウンドの実験のように響く。そしてその後で奏されるラスト曲『Tough Enough』は私が一番気に入っているロック調の曲、Milesの『Jack Johnson』でのJohn Mclaughlinのプレイと双璧をなす記憶に留めるべきアグレッシブなギタープレイである。意外だったのは思いの外Jan Garbarekのサックスが前面に出てこないことである。それが『Salt』と大きく異なる点であり、彼が誰のリーダー作品かを弁えていた結果なのであろう。1971年録音作品。☆☆☆☆☆

"Terje Rypdal / Terje Rypdal"

I was sorting out my record shelf yesterday and came across some old albums. One was the aforementioned Jan's "Salt" and the other was Terje Rypdal's "Terje Rypdal ". These two albums were next to each other on the record shelf, which must have felt like a pair to me at the time. This is Terja's first leader album on the ECM label, who was a member of Jan Garbarek's quintet at the time. The members are the same quintet from Jan's album, with the addition of Inger Lise Rypdal on voice, Tom Halversen on electric piano, and Bjornar Anderesen on electric piano. The main track, A1 "Keep It Like That - Tight", is influenced by Miles' "Jack Johnson" and "Bitches Blew", and B1 "Electric Fantasy" is clearly a cosmic song influenced by Weather Report's first album.  Of course, it's not the same, but Terje's Scandinavian aesthetic sense and originality are at work, making it a more intelligent and structured work. A2 "Rainbow" sounds like an experiment in cosmic sounds, and B2 "Lontango II" also sounds like an experiment in sounds using percussion instruments. The last song that follows, "Tough Enough," is a memorable aggressive guitar performance that rivals John Mclaughlin's playing on Miles' "Jack Johnson," my favorite rock song. What was surprising was that Jan Garbarek's saxophone does not come to the forefront as expected. This is a big difference from "Salt," and is probably the result of him being aware of who the leader of this work was. Recorded in 1971. ☆☆☆☆☆
