Hello. I am at Jiko-in Temple in Nara. A self-proclaimed Japanese garden girl, I will do my best to introduce the highlights of this garden as an amateur reporter.

こんにちは。今日は、奈良県の慈光院に来ました。日本庭園好きの自称・庭女子の私が、素人なりにここのお庭の鑑賞ポイントをお話させて頂きます。

Jiko-in Temple is a Zen Buddhist temple located in Yamatokoriyama-City, Nara Prefecture. This temple has a garden where you can enjoy the most elegant and tranquil views. I would like to introduce to you this wonderful garden that is almost too beautiful to believe.

慈光院は、奈良県大和郡山市にある禅宗寺院です。このお寺には、この上なく上品で、静謐な眺めを堪能できるお庭があります。この美しすぎる素晴らしいお庭をぜひ皆さんに観て頂きたいと思いましたので、ご紹介させて頂きます。

First, as I passed through the first gate I felt it in my bones, as if the quality of the atmosphere had changed completely: I experienced a very spiritual air. As I walked step by step on the paving-stone walkway leading from the first gate to the second, I felt as if my impurities were being removed one by one.

まず、門をくぐったあと、空気の質がぜんぜん違うことを肌で感じました。とても清らかな空気が漂い、このアプローチを一歩一歩踏み歩くたびに、まるで俗世界の汚れがひとつひとつ剝がされていくようです。

Additionally, the paving stones on the walkway look very fashionable and upscale. Medium-sized stones are arranged in repeating patterns in the middle of the walkway, and small stones are placed around them. All of the stones form perfectly straight lines. It is said that it is difficult to make clean corners in a paving-stone walkway like this, but its right angles are beautiful.

敷石もとてもおしゃれで、高級感があります。真ん中には飛石様にリズミカルに石が配され、その周囲は自然石を配しながらきっちりとした直線を作っています。このような直線の敷石は角を造るのが難しいと言われますが、このように美しい直角になっています。感動的な作りです。

Moss grows alongside the walkway, adding a soft tinge of fresh green. There are also rows of trees that extend their branches over the walkway in a procession of arches, and these seemed to welcome me.

そして、敷石の周りには苔が彩りを添えるように生え、頭上には来訪を歓迎してくれているかのように木々が枝を差し伸べてアーチを作ってくれています。

At the end of the walkway there is a second gate with a two-story roof, and this type of gate is called “Rou-Mon”. The roof, made of dried straw, is called a “Kayabuki-Yane”. The World Heritage site Shirakawa-go also has a roof like this. I had thought it was a traditional Japanese style, but I was surprised to learn that such a roof style exists all over the world.

アプローチの先には、楼門が見えてきます。楼門とは、二階建ての、屋根を持つ門のことです。この楼門は茅葺屋根という、ススキやヨシの干した藁などを材料として造られたものとなっています。代表的なものとして、世界遺産の「白川郷」の茅葺屋根が有名です。とても日本的な佇まいの屋根ですが、実は日本独自のものではなくて、世界中にこのような屋根があるそうです。私も知って、驚きました。

After you pass through the Rou-mon there are two paving-stone walkways with different designs. The one on the right is made of small stones with well-maintained moss between them. This walkway is called ”Miyuki-dou”, and it was made for welcoming the emperor. At the end of the Gyokou-dou there is a big pine tree shaped like a downturned dragon head. The other one on the left leads to the entrance, and at its end is the temple’s reception desk. I think that this walkway was probably made recently, but even so it is one of the beautiful features of the temple’s landscape and does not look out of place.

楼門をくぐると、またデザインの違う敷石が現れます。右は自然石を並べ、目地に苔が美しい敷石で、天皇などをお迎えする御幸道となっています。御幸道の先には大きな松があり、龍がこちらに頭を下げている形になっています。左は庫裏の玄関に続く敷石で、拝観受付があります。こちらの敷石は最近造られたものだと思いますが、風景に溶け込み違和感がありません。

In front of the entrance there is a glass bottle full of acorns with two shoe horns for visitors to use. I think this is a cute omotenashi (gesture of hospitality).

拝観受付の前にはこのように靴ベラが置いてあって、中にどんぐりが敷き詰められています。このさりげないかわいさには、キュンとさせられちゃいました。

Well then, let’s see the garden. These buildings and gardens were designed by Sekishu Katagiri, a feudal lord during the early Edo period who was also a civil engineer and a tea master. There is an amazing dry landscape garden here with a tidy trimmed line of plants, two stone washbasins, two pine trees grown from bonsai, and an area of white sand shaped like a pond. The marks on the surface of the sand represent quiet waves. The beauty tells me how much this garden is loved.

では、お待ちかねのお庭になります。この建物やお庭は、江戸時代初期に、土木奉行で茶人でもある片桐石州によりデザインされたものです。このお庭は枯山水庭園で、美しいラインの刈込の植栽と、盆栽から大切に育てられてきた松、２つの手水鉢が鎮座し、その間に、池に見立てて、白砂をひょうたん型に盛った枯山水があります。砂紋は静かな波を表わしているそうです。刈込のラインも本当に美しい！このお庭がどれだけ愛されているかを物語っています。

There is also an attractive courtyard here, and a big beautiful pine tree that was grown from a bonsai. I think it must have taken hundreds of years for it to manage growing to such a size and shape. It makes me consider how many people have been involved in its cultivation, how many people have worked on it, and loved it. The invisible flow of time gently envelops the whole garden, fully expressing the tranquility and aesthetic sense unique to Japanese gardens. While here I was able to touch a special beauty that can’t easily be replicated. Also, I felt that the garden has dignity because it has been cared for by gardeners for a long time. I felt in awe of the sublime beauty. On the edge of the courtyard there is also a stone used for Zen meditation called ”Zazenseki." Doing zazen in the garden must be a truly luxurious experience. By becoming a part of this elegant scenery, I think that people can reaffirm the meanings of existence and life.

そして、ここには美しい中庭もあります。一番目を引く松ですが、こちらも盆栽から育て上げた松だそうです。松をこのような大きさと形に育て上げるには、何百年とかかっていると思います。どれだけの人が関わり、手をかけ、愛しんできたでしょうか。その目には見えない時間の流れが、お庭全体を優しく包み、日本庭園独特の静謐さと美意識を存分に表現しています。美しさとは一石二鳥では作りえないということがよく理解できます。また、人が心を込めて長年手入れをしてきたお庭には、凛とした品位を感じます。このお庭の空気が纏う品には、敬畏の念を抱かずにはいられません。この中庭の端に座禅石があります。このお庭での座禅とは本当に贅沢な経験に違いありません。この美しい景色の一部となることによって、自分という存在の意義をあらためて認識し、新たな観念や諦観を得ることができるのではないでしょうか。

Also, the gardens here have aesthetic beauty in every spot. Despite its small scale, it is a truly wonderful garden, and I was really moved by the sights here.

また、ここのお庭は隅々にまで美意識が行き届いていて、この僅かな敷地にも素晴らしいお庭が造られており、とても感動させられました。

Today, I’ve told you about the Japanese garden at Jiko-in Temple. I feel that even the wind that blows through the garden here is beautiful. Spending a few hours in this quiet environment and taking the time to see the wonderful garden was an experience from which I really gained something that I will not forget anytime soon. I hope that through this video I can carry you away to the calm atmosphere here too.
