マメ目、マメ科、エンドウ属の一年生、
もしくは二年生の野菜

今から遡ること百年以上も前の１９２２年、
エジプトのピラミッドの中のツタンカーメン
王のお墓の発掘が行われた。１８才の若さで
亡くなったとされるその墓の中には副葬品が
いくつも埋葬されており、その中にあったと
されるのが『ツタンカーメンのエンドウ』と
呼ばれている豆である。


発掘に携わった者が、この豆を英国へと持ち
帰って、これを興味本位に植えてみると驚く
ことにこれが発芽し、栽培に成功したという
ものである。


その古代のエンドウマメが蘇ったものが今回
の写真に載せたものとされているが、この花
の特徴を述べると、マメ科の花の特徴となる
旗弁（花の上部にある花弁）は白色で一般の
エンドウマメとは近いものであるか、翼弁や
舟弁は赤紫色なのが、これの特徴となってて
これで豆ご飯を炊くと赤飯ができてしまうと
いう面白いものでもある。


これの花の後に成る実の鞘は紫色をしており
『紫エンドウ』の名で販売されているもので、
『ツタンカーメンのエンドウ』と家庭菜園用で
売られているのである。


ツタンカーメンが亡くなったのは、紀元前の
１３２４年のこと。そこから数え３,０００年
も前のこの実が成るわけないの意見もあるが
奇跡が起きたと考える方がロマンがある。

In 1922, over a hundred years ago, excavations were conducted in the tomb of King Tutankhamen in the Egyptian pyramids. Among the burial goods found in the tomb, there were several items, including a type of bean known as the "Pea of Tutankhamen," believed to have been buried there.


Those involved in the excavation brought these beans back to England, out of curiosity planted them, and to their surprise, they sprouted and were successfully cultivated.


The ancient pea has been revived, as depicted in the attached photo. Describing the characteristics of this flower, the flag petal (the uppermost petal) is white, similar to ordinary peas, while the wing and keel petals are reddish-purple, making it interesting as it results in red rice when cooked with rice.


The pods that develop after the flowers are purple in color and are sold under the name "Purple Pea." They are marketed both as "Pea of Tutankhamen" and for home gardening.


Tutankhamen died in 1324 BC, and some argue that it's impossible for these peas to have developed over 3,000 years ago, but believing in miracles adds a touch of romance.
