マーラーの交響曲第１０番は、未完のままに終わった悲劇的な作品でありながら、その補筆完成版には私の心を捉える何かがあります。私のコレクションには、この交響曲の既発のディスクがほぼ全て揃っています。

デリック・クックによる補筆完成版が最も有名ですが、他にも多くのバージョンが存在し、それらに対する批判も多いのが現状です。マーラーマニアの友人でさえ、第２楽章については「全くなってない」と否定的な意見を持っています。

しかし、私にとってこの交響曲は、マーラーの全作品中でも特に際立っており、第９交響曲の高みに匹敵する唯一の作品だと感じています。現存する「演奏可能版」でさえ、第９を除く他のどの交響曲よりも優れていると考えています。

ブルーノ・ワルターがアルマ・マーラーに宛てた手紙には、「マーラーの手を経ていない未完成作を公衆の前にさらすことは残念だ」と記されています。しかし、私は異なる見解を持っています。人類の至宝とも呼ぶべき芸術作品であれば、たとえ作者の明確な意志に反していたとしても、未完の草稿は公表されるべきだと考えます。自筆譜のファクシミリを読むことができるのは一部の音楽学者だけですから、一般の音楽ファンにも聴かせるためには、「演奏可能版」の作成が不可欠です。

マーラーが直面していた形式的な課題は、ソナタ形式が機能しなくなり、調性音楽が崩壊しつつある中で、どのようにして交響曲を書き続けるかという問いでした。第５楽章には、その問いに対する最も見事な解答が示されています。ソナタや変奏曲といった既存の形式を完全に捨て去り、独創的で感動的な終楽章を私たちにもたらしています。

Mahler's Symphony No. 10 is a tragic work that was left unfinished, but there is something about the completed and revised version that captures my heart. My collection has almost all discs of this symphony already released.

The completed version with supplements by Derrick Cook is the most famous, but there are many other versions, and there are many criticisms of them. Even my friend who is a Mahler enthusiast has a negative opinion about the second movement, saying, ``It doesn't work at all.''

However, for me, this symphony stands out among all of Mahler's works, and I feel that it is the only work that can rival the heights of the Ninth Symphony. Even the existing "playable version" of this symphony is considered superior to any other symphony except the Ninth.

Bruno Walter's letter to Alma Mahler states, ``It would be a shame to expose to the public an unfinished work that did not go through Mahler's hands.'' However, I have a different view. If it is a work of art that can be called the greatest treasure of humanity, I believe that the unfinished draft should be made public, even if it is against the creator's express will. Since only some musicologists can read facsimiles of autographed scores, it is essential to create a ``playable version'' so that general music fans can hear them.

The formal challenge facing Mahler was how he could continue writing symphonies when the sonata form was failing and tonal music was collapsing. The fifth movement provides the most brilliant answer to that question. He completely abandons existing forms such as sonatas and variations, and brings us an original and moving final movement.
