英文法を英文で学び直す Vol.1 Past tenses

I want to improve my English skills more. I will try to explain about English Grammar in English. If my understanding is not correct, please let me know.

Let’s check about Past tenses today.

We often use “Past Simple” when we are talking about past actions.
e.g. I bought a new tablet.
I booked a ticket for the concert.
I met him at our school.

These actions are completely finished at the past time.

In the similar case, we can use “Past Simple Passive”.
Japanese students have called it “UKEMI”.
“Past Simple Passive” can use the completed event in the past and emphasize the “receiver” of the action.

e.g.
We weren’t told about the visit.
The man was given an award for bravery.

By the way, When should we use “Present Simple Passive”.
If you want to explain facts and habits(an action is repeated) or universal truths, you should use “Present Simple Passive”.

e.g.
The floors are washed every day.
The company is run by him.

When you want to explain that the action that happened in the past is connected to the present time, you should use “Present Perfect Passive”.

e.g.
A fireman has been injured in the fire.
(he is still injured)
The cat hasn’t been seen since Tuesday.
(I can’t confirm yet)

What about the difference between “Present Continuous” and “Past Continuous”? When you want to explain the action that began in the past and is ongoing, you should use  “Present Continuous” or “Past Continuous”. These are very similar. But if you want to emphasize the situation below, you prefer to use “Past Continuous”.

1 An action in the past that gets interrupted
e.g.
They were sleeping(interrupted action) peacefully until the alarm rang.
My wife arrived at home while I was watching the football game.

2 Ongoing actions at a specifiedtime(past)
e.g.
At midnight, everyone at the bus stop was waiting.
By the age of five, I was practicing my Violin.

3 Past Habits
*always,constantly, forever, entire time
e.g.
My first year in college,
I was making spelling mistakes all the time.

4 Emphasizing how long a past action took *for hours, all night, all week
e.g.
The player was training all year for this match.

5 Setting the background the story
e.g.
The bird was singing, and the sun was shining. I knew it would be a good day.

The city was going about its business
without knowing the aliens had arrived.

The students were enjoying talking in the classroom. Then a new teacher entered.

I would like to confirm about Perfect tenses(Present Perfect/Past Perfect/Future Perfect)tomorrow.
