Debate Practices vol.1

A few days ago, my friends who is living in Tokyo and friends while about 10 years texted me "Tell me about your opinions of debate in your class".

So, I'll attempt to dig these topics and my opinions at here.

We debated about "We shouldn't allow the death penalty?" at Week1. I was on the No side.

In 2024, 53 countries maintain the death penalty in low. This number is 27% of United Nations member. 23 countries permit to death penalty but not used least 10 years recently. This number is 11% of United Nations member.

I want to note my opinion at first in this debate(we should allow that).

In my country(Japan) has been allowing death penalty after WordWar2. 728 inmates were decided to death penalty(1946-2007).

In 2021, 107 inmates currently sit on death low awaiting execution. If the country to remove the death penalty, the number of crime will be increasing. Death penalty has deterrence of crimes.

other students who were also on the No side said "we should allow that resolve to victim's regret" or "If he or she go the prison, they can still live as usual. They can do business and enjoy something, so we should allow it".

On the other hand, other student who was on the Yes side said "He or She spend a long time in the prison alone, that's enough".

In my personal opinion, actually the effective punishment is different depending on each person. If someone who wants to die kills a lot of people, the person receive a verdict as death penalty. But this verdict is not penalty, it's more of a reward for the person. The court have to think carefully in each case, for each criminal "What is the most harsh punishment for this criminal"

The next topic is "Is it ethical to listen to Michael Jackson Music?".
