March 14, 2024: English Grammar （英文法）

I have finally got done with an English grammar book, Macmillan’s English Grammar In Context. It took me about five or six months to finish. The book was not as easy to understand as other grammar books. It did not describe each topic in detail. In the beginning, I was so confused with the simple description that I was about to give up on it. So, I needed a longer time to understand each topic. I had to refer to other books or websites to understand each topic well. Among the things I referred to was Oxford’s Practical English Usage, which helped me a lot.
But as I kept doing it, I was aware of how valuable it was. It had a lot of good quality exercises. Each sentence of the exercises was what I had to memorize and use in my writing. So I typed up every sentence of the exercises and tried to use them when I wrote articles for ‘note’. It took me a long time, and sometimes frustrated me, to do it. But I managed to finish it. I do not know how much the exercise helps me improve my English writing, but I am sure that it is never a waste of time.
And now, what should I do after this? Should I do the book again or anything else? In any case, I have to continue to study English grammar. I still have a lot to learn about it. In particular, I have to learn more about tenses. I still do not understand them fully and cannot use them properly. Probably, it is the best way to read only the part of tenses in the grammar books I have and do the exercises.

マクミランの『English Grammar In Context』という英文法の本をようやくやり終えました。終えるのに5、6ヶ月かかりました。この本は他の文法書ほどわかりやすくなかったです。各トピックについて詳しい説明がなかったのです。 最初のうちは、簡単な説明に困惑し、あきらめかけました。そのため、各トピックを理解するのに時間がかかりました。しっかりと理解するために、他の本やウェブサイトを参照しなければなりませんでした。参照したものの中では、オックスフォードの『Practical English Usage』がとても役に立ちました。
でも、続けているうちに、この本のありがたみに気づきました。たくさんの良質な練習問題があったのです。練習問題の一文一文が、暗記してライティングで使うべきものでした。だから、練習問題のすべての文章を書いて、『note』の記事を書くときに使おうとしました。時間がかかり、めげることもありましたが、何とかやり切りました。これがどれだけ英文ライティングの上達に役立っているかはわかりません。でも、決して時間の無駄でないことは確かです。
さて、この後はどうしましょう。またこの本をやるか、それとも他のことをやるかです。いずれにせよ、英文法の勉強は続けなければなりません。まだまだ勉強しなければならないことがたくさんあるからです。特に時制についてもっと勉強しなければなりません。時制をまだ十分に理解しきれていないし、適切に使うことができていません。たぶん、持っている文法書の時制の部分だけを読んで、練習問題をやるのが一番いい方法かもしれません。
