May 4, 2024: Small Musical Box （小さなオルゴール）
A small musical box. It is a mechanical musical instrument that does not need to play with the hand or other parts of the human body. It can only play a short part of musical notes, but the sounds are always comfortable and relax me. It has been used in a lot of things, such as toys, jewellery boxes and so on. But with the passing of years, it has lost its appeal and is rarely seen nowadays.
It was my first teacher through which I learnt a lot of things about business. In other words, it was a company of the instruments that I first worked for after graduating from university. I joined the company, hoping to get involved in overseas business. But against my wish, I was first assigned to the quality control department, which was a great disappointment to me. I had no knowledge or experience of quality control at all. I reluctantly worked there for about 2 years. Then, my dream came true and I could move to the overseas business department. I had a lot of things to learn as soon as I joined the department. First, I had to study English very hard because my English was too poor to use in business. I worked hard day and night to learn English reading and writing. It was one year later that I managed to use my English in business. I also had to learn about the instrument because it has so many types. Some could play musical notes longer than regular ones, but some had extra functions which allowed them to do things other than play notes. I also learnt a lot about paperwork in the business. I mainly learnt about them from my superiors, but also from my female colleague, my present wife.
Looking back on those days, it was a hard time until I fully understood the instrument business. But it was the best place for me to learn about business just after graduating from university. My bosses were very tolerant and gave me a lot of time and chances to talk and discuss. What I learnt there was still the basis of my later life.
So, I still love small musical boxes and hope to continue to enjoy them forever.
小さなオルゴール。機械仕掛けの楽器で、演奏するのに手などを使う必要はありません。曲の一部しか演奏できませんが、その音色はいつも心地よく、リラックスさせてくれます。オルゴールは、おもちゃや宝石箱など、多くのものに使われてきました。でも、年月が経つにつれて、その魅力は失われ、今ではほとんど見かけなくなりました。
ボクは、オルゴールの会社で、ビジネスについて多くのことを学びました。大学を卒業して初めて就職したのが、オルゴールの会社でした。海外ビジネスに携わりたくて、入社しました。でも、希望に反して、最初は、品質管理部門に配属されました。品質管理の知識も経験もまったくなかったので、そこで2年ほどいやいや働いていました。それから、念願かなって海外事業部に異動することができました。配属されたとたん、覚えることがたくさんありました。まず、自分の英語力があまりにお粗末で、ビジネスで使えませんでした。それで、英語を猛勉強しました。昼夜を問わず、英語の読み書きを必死に勉強しました。なんとかビジネスで英語を使えるようになったのは、それから1年後のことでした。また、オルゴールにはたくさんの種類があるので、勉強しなければなりませんでした。普通のオルゴールより長く奏でてくれるものもあれば、音符を奏でる以外のことができるものもありました。事務処理についても多くのことを学びました。主に上司から教わりましたが、同僚の女性（現在の妻）からも教わりました。
今思えば、オルゴールの仕事を十分に分かるまでは大変でした。でも、大学を卒業したばかりのボクがビジネスを学ぶには最高の場所でした。上司はとても寛容で、たくさん話したり相談したりする時間がありました。そこで学んだことは、今でもボクのその後の人生のベースになっています。
今でも小さなオルゴールが大好きだし、これからもずっと楽しみたいと思っています。
