November 21, 2022: Sawako Agawa, Lecture (2)（阿川佐和子さん、講演会（2））
Nevertheless, she has had a lot of encounters on books since she was a child. In this lecture, she revealed three of them.
In her childhood, she had a chance to talk with a children's author and translator. It was Momoko Ishii, the founder of Katsura Library. It gave Sawako a lot of occasions to talk with Momoko. She often visited it with her brother. Unlike her brother, she hardly read books and walked around it. Then, Momoko spoke to her.
After she began to work, she had a chance to interview another children's author. It was Kyoko Matsuoka, the founder of Tokyo Children's Library. It made Sawako aware of what matters in reading books. It is not how many books we read. She found it more important to have time to think of the book after reading it. Doing so helps to understand it fully by identifying my life with the book. The key is to take in the book.
そうはいっても、彼女には、幼い頃に始まり、大人になっても、本に関する出会いが多くあったようです。講演では、3つの出会について話を聞けました。
子どもの頃には、児童文学作家であり翻訳家の方との出会いがありました。かつら文庫を創設した石井桃子さんです。かつら文庫で石井さんとたくさん話す機会があったそうです。佐和子さんは、お兄様とこの文庫を度々訪れていたそうです。でも、お兄様とは違って、佐和子さんは本を読まず、施設の中を歩き回っていたそうです。そんなとき、石井さんが声を掛けてくれたそうです。
仕事を始めてからは、別の児童文学作家さんにインタビューする機会があったそうです。東京子ども図書館を創設した松岡享子さんです。インタビューで、佐和子さんは、読書で大事なことに気付いたそうです。それは、どれだけたくさんの本を読んだかではなく、一冊の本を読んだ後に時間を取って本について考える時間が大事ということです。本の内容と自身のことを重ね合わせて考える時間をつくることで本の本当の意味が分かるのだということです。一冊の本をじっくりと味わうことが大事なようです。
