May 5, 2024: Children’s Day （こどもの日）

In Japan, we have a number of days in a year when children's happiness is celebrated. Today, 5 May is one of the days, and it is called Children’s Day. On this day in my childhood, I used to enjoy traditional Japanese snacks, Kashiwa Mochi, and the carp-shaped windsocks which flew in the air. I think that even today, a lot of families with children enjoy the snacks. But lately, I have rarely had a chance to see the carp-shaped windsocks flying in the air. That is a bit of pity, but I can do nothing about it. All I can do today is to wish for the health and happiness of my granddaughter and her parents.
A week ago, on April 29, she and her parents came to my home. It had been one month since I met her last. But she made a drastic change in a month and surprised me. A month ago, she just managed to roll over onto her other side and was unable to crawl at all. So, she just moved around in a small space. But this time, she was able to roll over very easily and repeated it countless times. She also began to crawl. When she crawled, she was still unable to use the bottom of her foot well. But she could move on her stomach very well by using her arms. She was moving around so quickly that I could not take my eyes off her. I always had to keep watching where she would go and what she would do. Then, she suddenly had a strong interest in an electric fan. She was pulling the code and pressing the buttons. During that time, I had to keep holding the fan to prevent it from falling over her.
I was also happy that she had an interest in me. When she met my gaze, she opened her eyes widely and smiled happily. Moreover, she started crawling to come close to me and repeated it again and again for me.
She only stayed at my home for about five hours. But it was a wonderful time for me and also empowered me.

　日本には、子供を祝う日が年に何日かあります。今日の5月5日もその１つで、「こどもの日」と呼ばれている日です。子供の頃、この日には柏餅を食べたり、鯉のぼりを泳がせたりしたものです。今でも子供のいる家庭では、柏餅を楽しむ人は多いと思います。でも、最近は、鯉のぼりを見る機会が少なくなってしまいました。すこし残念ですが、どうしようもありません。今日できることは、孫娘とその両親の健康と幸せを祈ることだけです。
　１週間前の4月29日、孫娘一家が来てくれました。孫娘とは1カ月ぶりの再会でした。でも1カ月で劇的な変化を遂げ、びっくりです。一ヶ月前は、寝返りをうつだけでハイハイはまったくできませんでした。そのため、狭いところを動き回るだけだったのですが、今回は大違いでした。寝返りは簡単に打てるようになり、数え切れないくらい繰り返していました。さらに、ハイハイを始めました。ハイハイをする時に、まだ足の裏を上手に使えないのですが、お腹と腕を上手に使ってはって動くことができるようになっていました。あまりに素早く動き回るので、目を離せませんでした。どこに行って、何をするのか、いつも見張っていなければなりませんでした。突然、扇風機に興味を持ち、コードを引っ張ったり、ボタンを押したりしているときもありました。その間、扇風機が倒れないように押さえていました。
　また、孫娘がボクに興味を持ってくれたのも嬉しかったです。ボクと目が合うと、目を大きく開いて嬉しそうに微笑んでくれました。そして、ハイハイでボクに近づこうとしてくれました。また、それを何度も繰り返してくれました。
　我が家いてくれたのは5時間ほどでしたが、ボクにはとても素晴らしい時間となり、元気をもらえました。
