My企画# 「 #TOEIC語彙 で遊ぶ」

他の方の英語学習記事をベースに（勝手に）企画を作る試みです。
目的は語彙UPになるきっかけを増やす事。
ルールは楽しく学ぶこと。
楽しいことは記憶に残りやすい。

『TOEIC語彙で遊ぶ』はその名の通り
面白い例文をつくること
関連・連想する単語をひとまとめにしてみること
そんな事を通して英単語を覚えやすくするというもの。
「#TOEIC語彙」を入れて検索できるようにするだけ。
特にまとめたりはしません…。

exhaust ～を使い果たす

Exhaustの意味を覚えるには、イメージが大事。
3つ覚えておいた方が良いです。

to use all of something so that there is none left:
the waste gas from an engine, especially a car's, or the pipe the gas flows through:
to make a person or an animal extremely tired:

一つ目の意味は使い果たす事。資源とか選択肢。使い切っちゃったよ、とかもうこれ以上使えるものがない表現。Exhaust all resources and optionsみたいな。

二つ目は排気ガスの事。これは覚えるしかない。燃料を使い切った後にでてくるものは排気ガス、ですね。

3つ目の意味はとても疲れさせる事。I am exhausted. この表現をするひと、意外といます。

3つの意味を1文で全部使う例は…
I am exhausted from experimenting and exhausting all resources and options to create a system that do not produce the exhaust at all. 
意味？
廃棄ガスを排出しないシステムを作る資源も選択肢も使い果たして、私は疲れ果ててしまった。

adequate 質や量が十分な

enough or satisfactory for a particular purpose:

Adequateで思いつくのはその逆の言葉、Inadequate. 
Feeling inadequate ？自信がないなと言う意味。
Inadequate funding? 資金がたりない。
Adequateを使うのは実用的かどうかの表現の時に多いと思う。
Adequate feedback, Adequate healthcare, Adequate perception. 

AdequateとInadequate を1つの文で使うと…
I feel inadequate to reach a conclusion as I cannot be sure whether adequate amount of research had been conducted. 
十分に研究されていると確信できないので、結論を出す自信がない。

be capable of doing ～する能力がある

「Capable」という単語を語るならCapabilityとかCapacityも知っておきたい。
Capability は physical or intellectual ability; skill; talent .
Capacity は ability to receive, hold or absorb. The max amount.

この3つを1つの文でつかうと？
I’m capable of estimating capability and capacity of any system. 
こんなことが言えるのはシステムエンジニア、かな。

Revisit 再検討する
Revision　改訂、改正、補正、改訂版などの意味
Review　見直す
Revalue 　再評価する
似たような言葉は、まとめて覚えておくと便利。

prime 準備する

準備する以外にもいろんな意味がある…。

Priming effect 「経験したことや見たり聞いたりした情報が、認知や行動に影響を及ぼす効果のことです。 プライミングのもととなる言葉「prime」は「準備する」という意味をもつ英単語で、認知心理学では先に取り入れた情報が潜在的に作用する現象を「プライム記憶」と呼んでいます。」(unprinted)

こんな風にいろんな意味でつかわれる言葉なので、一つだけ覚えているとちょっと危険。全部覚えていないといけない訳ではないけれど、他の意味もあるんだなぁ、と言う風に見ておいた方が無難。

primary （形）主要な/（名）予備選挙

この言葉も使われ方によって、違う意味を持つ。

more important than anything else; main:

英単語の意味を英語で調べてしまう事。
語彙が増えること間違いなし。
