【英語で沖縄を学ぶ】10月17日は「沖縄そばの日」

10月17日は「沖縄そばの日」です。
なぜこの日が「沖縄そばの日」と呼ばれるようになったのかについて、沖縄生麺協同組合のホームページに説明がありましたので、今回はその内容を簡単な英語にして紹介したいと思います。

In 1976, four years after Okinawa's return to Japan, the Fair Trade Commission ruled that under the Fair Competition Trade Code, Okinawan soba that did not contain more than 30 percent buckwheat flour could not be labeled as "soba".

In response, Okinawa Fresh Noodle Cooperative Association started a campaign for the continuation of calling the dish "soba", which is familiar to the local people. As a result, the registration of the trademark "Honba Okinawa soba" was officially approved on October 17, 1978, under the annex to the already existing regulations on the labeling of fresh noodles.

To commemorate this day, October 17 was established as "Okinawa Soba Day" in 1997.
