Why Europe? The Differences Between Japanese and European Art Scenes
Challenges in Japan’s Art Industry
Art is often associated with “freedom” and “expression.” However, after over a decade as a photographer in Japan, I have frequently felt that these freedoms are constrained. In Japan’s art industry, factors like an artist’s background, gallery affiliation, or mentor’s reputation often outweigh the value of the work itself.
Moreover, the perception that “art must be sophisticated” remains deeply ingrained. Exhibitions often prioritize presentation or environment over the raw power of the artwork itself. As a result, new and unconventional artists often struggle to receive recognition. I have encountered these barriers firsthand and found myself questioning the limitations of working within Japan.
My Experience in Berlin: A World Where Art Speaks for Itself
In August of this year, I traveled to Berlin for a 15-day street photography journey. Berlin’s art scene thrives on the merit of the work itself, free from reliance on an artist’s connections or fame. Armed only with my camera, I walked the streets, capturing moments as they unfolded. To my surprise, locals who viewed my photos expressed genuine interest, and some even purchased my work on the spot.
This experience revealed the stark contrast between Japan and Europe’s art worlds. It demonstrated that my photography can resonate with people beyond cultural or linguistic boundaries. It also solidified my belief that Europe is where my work can truly flourish.
Why I Aim to Pursue My Challenge in Europe
Europe is home to major photography events like France’s Paris Photo and Germany’s Photokina. These venues provide platforms where photographers from around the world can showcase their work and be evaluated purely on artistic merit. I believe these opportunities align perfectly with my mission to convey themes of “universal beauty” and “the interconnectedness of life.”
Additionally, Europe offers robust public support for artists, including grants and open platforms for sharing work. Unlike Japan, where artists often face constraints, Europe provides an environment where creative freedom thrives. To pursue my art without compromise, I am determined to expand my activities to Europe.
My Mission: Sharing Universal Beauty Through European Solo Exhibitions
Starting in 2025, I plan to host solo exhibitions in various European countries, including France, Italy, Germany, and Greece. Through these exhibitions, I aim to:
Share Universal Beauty
My photographs seek to reveal the beauty that transcends cultural and societal divides. By presenting these works, I hope to foster a shared appreciation for the connections that unite us as one life.Bridge Divides in a Fragmented World
At a time when the world feels increasingly divided, I believe that my photography can serve as a bridge, encouraging people to focus on shared humanity rather than differences.Grow as an Artist
Europe’s art scene is both discerning and rewarding. Receiving recognition in this environment would mark a significant step forward for me as a photographer.
How the Funds Will Be Used
To realize this challenge, I have set a crowdfunding goal of $3,240 (approximately ¥500,000). Here’s how the funds will be allocated:
Living Expenses ($648 or ¥100,000): Covering basic costs to allow me to focus on my work.
Production Costs ($972 or ¥150,000): Creating photo books, postcards, and framed artwork.
Exhibition Fees ($1,296 or ¥200,000): Participation in galleries and art fairs.
European Research and Travel ($3,240 or ¥500,000): Travel and accommodations to establish a base in Europe.
Rewards for Supporters
As a token of my gratitude, I have prepared the following rewards:
$2 (¥300): An exclusive digital photo from my daily life with a personalized comment.
$7 (¥1,000): A set of 5 exclusive digital photos.
$33 (¥5,000): A signed photo book.
