Hey, I'm Mike.
やあ、僕はマイク。
I'm gonna share a childhood story when I was about 12 years old.
僕が12歳の頃にあった話をするよ。
My father really, really enjoyed camping.
僕の父はものすごくキャンプが好きだった。
He enjoyed hiking.
ハイキングも。
He enjoyed skiing.
スキーもね。
He loved to go out into the wilderness and experience nature.
父は原野などに出て行って自然を満喫するのが大好きだった。
And a lot of the time, he would bring me along with him.
父はしばしば僕も一緒に連れて行ってくれた。
Now, sometimes I enjoyed these trips.
楽しいと感じるときもあったけど、
Sometimes, I would rather have stayed at home and played video games.
家でビデオゲームをしていたいと思うこともあった。
But I really appreciate a lot of the experiences that I had.
でも、たくさんの経験をさせてもらったことは感謝してる。
Sometimes those experiences were very memorable.
すごく記憶に残っている体験もあるよ。
One experience that I can remember in particular is that I grew up in the US near the Great Lakes, (Lake..) Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Superior.
特に記憶に残っているのは、僕はアメリカのミシガン湖、ヒューロン湖、スペリオル湖などの五大湖の近くで育ったんだけど、
They’re in the central North part of America.
アメリカ中北部だね。
And in the lakes, there is an island called Mackinac Island.
その湖水地域には、マキノー島という島があるんだ。
Mackinac Island is somewhat unique because you cannot access it by car.
マキノー島は、車で行くことができないちょっとユニークな島。
You have to take a ferry across.
フェリーで渡らなくてはいけない。
And there are no cars on the island.
そして島にはまったく車が走っていない。
So (it's..) it's a decently large island.
そこそこ大きな島なんだけどね。
And you can walk around and explore the island.
歩いて島を探索することもできる。
A lot of forests and some very interesting rock formations.
たくさん森があって、いくつもの変わった岩層がある。
One of the rock formations is a big rock just in the middle of a forest.
そのうちの一つは大きな岩で、森のちょうど真ん中にあって、
And it's called Sugarloaf Rock.
シュガーローフ・ロックと呼ばれている。
And as we always did my dad and I, whenever we saw something really interesting as a rock formation, we wanted to climb it.
そして毎度のように父と僕は、変わった岩層を見つけるといつもそうなんだが、その岩層に登ってみたくなった。
This rock formation was really tall.
岩層の高さはとても高かった。
It was quite a bit taller than the trees.
周囲の木々よりも少し高いくらい。
But it was also very easy to climb because it was a kind of sandstone.
でも砂岩みたいな感じで、とても登りやすかった。
So it had very easy hand holds and nice rough texture.
つかまるところが十分あったし、表面もほどよくザラザラしていた。
And although it was quite steep, it was not slippery.
かなり急傾斜だったけど、滑りやすくはなかった。
It was easy to climb to the top.
頂上まで登るのは簡単だった。
So we climbed for about 20 minutes
約20分かけて登って、
and ended up at the very, very top of this rock, this Sugarloaf Rock.
シュガーローフ・ロックの頂上の一番高いところに到着した。
And you're looking out over the whole forest.
周囲の森を全て見下ろすことができるんだ。
You're well above the trees.
周りの木々よりもだいぶ高いから。
And it's a beautiful, beautiful view.
ものすごく美しい景色なんだよ。
So we sat there for a little while and enjoyed the scenery.
父と僕はしばらくそこに座って景色を堪能した。
And then, we realized it was getting dark and we needed to get back home.
そのうち暗くなってきて、家に帰らないといけないことに気がついた。
Now, the problem was, with this rock, once you're at the very top, the top was smooth
問題は、その岩層の一番てっぺんは表面がツルツルしていることなんだ。
because it had been eroded by wind and rain and weather and snow and ice,
風、雨、天候、雪、氷によって浸食され続けたからだ。
which is quite common to that area of America.
アメリカのこの地方ではよくあることなんだけど。
And the top was very smooth and slippery.
だから頂上部分はとてもツルツルしていて滑りやすい。
There was nothing to grab on to on the very top.
頂上には何もつかまるものがない。
So in order to get down the rock, you had to lay down on your stomach
そのため岩層から降りるには、うつ伏せにならなければならない。
and put your hands on the rock and just slide backwards gradually,
岩に手を当てて、ゆっくりと足の方から滑り降りるんだ。
hoping that you would be able to grab on to something before you went all the way over the edge.
岩層の端まで行き着く前に何かにつかまることができるよう願いながら。
I remember still today, how scared I felt just trusting myself to slide down the hill
今でも覚えてるよ、どんなに怖い思いをして滑り降りたか。
and hoping that I would grab something before I fell off the cliff.
崖から落ちる前に何かにつかまることができるように、と願いながらね。
Still one of my best memories of hiking with my dad.
でも、今でも父と行ったハイキングで一番の思い出だよ。
It was a really, really beautiful experience
ものすごく貴重な体験をさせてもらった。
(eh..) although I probably wouldn't choose to do that one again.
たぶんもう二度とあんなことはやらないだろうけどね。
