Thoughts on アグレッシブ烈子

I enjoy watching Retsuko because I love death metal, metalcore, grindcore, etc. Usually, the show touches on some social issues in Japan, and it is interesting to see how they intertwine it with Retsuko's love for singing aggressive music at karaoke. This second season, however, rubbed me the wrong way.

Sure, the guy she was dating had some extreme views, but after just being together for a few weeks, they start to talk about marriage? Yeah, he shouldn't have told her to quit her job, but she had no right to whine about him not wanting to start a family or wanting to get married. People grow together and compliment each other's life goals. Just because someone isn't an exact match doesn't mean that they should give up. And what suffering is Retsuko going through? She's 25! instead of focusing on finding someone to take care of her, I think she needs to grow up.

I would love to see a program that shows that we can have interest in various forms of music without it reflecting negativity on our personalities. The one point in the show, the one where she found bliss being with her bf, was the only moment she's ever not shouted. What does this indicate?

Aggressive music is such a comfort, especially when I feel emotional, be that angry, happy, or sad. But this show attempts to portray those who listen to this kind of music as just hiding a hidden anger, like a dark secret.

Japan's society is multilayered and nothing is clear cut. Those not accustomed to it like to attach sentiments of inequality or the result of a traditional patriarchal society as the reason for this kind of content. Yes these aspects may have some influence, but I think that this may have just been a failed attempt to connect a niche idea with themes the are consumable on all levels. It is, after all, a Sanrio production. I really should not have been expecting so much.

But if possible, Retsuko, find your power again! Scream until your lungs burst!
