◎山形県庄内地方から多くのすぐれた作家や文人が輩出しています。文豪・高山樗牛、随筆家・評論家・書評家・芥川賞作家で「書物の達人」と言われる丸谷才一、時代小説の名作を残し「文章の名手」と言われる直木賞作家の藤沢周平、英語学者・評論家で「知の巨人」と言われる渡部昇一、丸谷才一や渡部昇一と交流があり「言葉の達人」と言われる直木賞作家の井上ひさし、芥川賞作家の奥泉光、直木賞作家の佐藤賢一などがいます。

◎ Many excellent writers and poets have been produced from the Shonai region of Yamagata prefecture. They are a master of writing・Chogyu Takayama, a writer and a book critic・Saiichi Maruya who is called a “master of books” and was awarded the Akutagawa Prize, the Naoki Prize-winning author・ Shuhei Fujisawa who is called a “master of writing”, leaving many masterpieces of literary novels, an English scholar and a critic・Shoichi Watanabe who is called an “intellectual giant”, the Naoki Prize-winning author・Hisashi Inoue who is called a “master of words” and interacts with Saiichi Maruya and Shoichi Watanabe. And there are also the Akutagawa Prize-winning author・Hikaru Okuizumi and the Naoki Prize-winning author・Ken-ichi Sato.

1 高山樗牛(1871~1902・明治4~35)
明治期の美学者,倫理学者,文芸評論家。山形県鶴岡生れ。本名林次郎。旧姓斎藤,幼い時に高山家へ入籍。第二高等中学(後の第二高等学校)を経て1896年東京帝大文科大学哲学科を卒業。94年在学中『読売新聞』の懸賞小説に『平家物語』に材を取った悲恋物語『滝口入道』が入選し注目されたが,樗牛自身は学問の活性化をめざしてエッセイストの道を選んだ。96年第二高等学校教授となったが,翌年辞任して博文館に入社,雑誌『太陽』の主筆と
して,鋭い批評文を精力的に書いた。
1 Chogyu Takayama (1871~1902・Meiji 4~35)
An aesthetician, an ethicist, and a literary critic in the Meiji era. Born in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture. His real name is Rinjiro. He joined the Takayama family as an adopted child when he was young. He graduated from the Department of Philosophy, Tokyo Imperial University of Arts and Sciences in 1896 after passing through the Second Higher Junior High School (later the Second Higher School). While attending the school in 1994, the tragic love story "Takiguchi Nyudo", which was based on "The Tale of the Heike", was selected for the prize novel of "Yomiuri Shimbun" and attracted attention. He became a professor at the Second High School in 1996, but resigned the following year and joined Hakubunkan company, where he wrote sharp criticisms as the chief editor of the magazine "The Sun".

・「天にありては星、地にありては花、人にありては愛、これ世に美しきものの最たらずや」(出典:『太陽』(明治二九〔1896〕年八月号)に初出の「『今戸心中』と情死」(『樗牛全集』第二巻、博文館)
・「己の立てるところを深く掘れ。そこには泉あらむ」(『高山樗牛全集第四巻―時勢及思索』)(筆者英語訳:Dig deeply where you stand. You will surely find a spring there.)
・「金銭のみ人を富ますものに非ず、権勢のみ人を貴くするものに非ず。」(『美的生活を論ず』)
・「大いなる人となるの道は唯二つあるのみである。己の小さきを悟るのは其の一つである。己の大いなるを信ずるは他の一つである。」(『雑談』)
山形県鶴岡市にある鶴岡公園には二基の碑文が建立されています。
・「文は是に至りて畢竟(ひっきょう)人なり命なり人生也」(「文章は、つまるところ、書き手の人間性や、命(生きる姿勢)、人生の有り様(ありよう)が如実に表れるものである」と説いています。)
・「吾人は須(すべか)らく現代を超越せざるべからず」(「目先のことにとらわれず、こころざしに向かって努力し、立派な人となって今の世の中以上のすばらしい社会をつくろう」と説いています。)

Two inscriptions have been erected in the Tsuruoka Park in Tsuruoka city, Yamagata Prefecture.
・ "Sentences reach the point where they show the nature of a human being, his life and his way of life" (*"Sentences, after all, clearly show the human nature of the writer, life (the attitude of living), and the way of life.”)
・ "I have no choice but to transcend the present age" (*"Let's work toward our hearts without being bound by the immediate future, become a good person, and create a wonderful society beyond the present world." )
