［英詩］Bob Dylan, 'Positively 4th Street'

英詩のマガジンの本配信、今月2本目です。歌われる詩の1回めです。今回はボブ・ディランのコンピレーション・アルバム 'Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits' (1967) に収められた 'Positively 4th Street' です(「寂しき４番街」)。

録音は1965年7月29日。'From a Buick 6' とのカプリングで、シングル盤として1965年9月7日に出ました。Fourth Street とはニューヨーク市のグレニッチヴィレッジの(東西の)通りの名前で、ディランはかつて、そこの161番地のアパートの2階に住んでいました。

なお、南北の通りは Avenue といいます。その Avenue の方が日本語の「〜番街」に当たるので、邦題の「寂しき４番街」は、やや誤解を招きます。Fourth Street は日本語の「4丁目」に当たります。タイトルは、そこに 'Positively'「明確に、断然」の意の副詞を前置しています。ディランの歌のうち不可解なタイトルの代表例と言えます。一体どんな歌なのでしょうか。

まとめ

ボブ・ディランの 'Positively 4th Street' は、人間関係を清算するような歌であり、ディランにあっては珍しいタイプ。'Ballad in Plain D' に似た種類の歌ともいわれる。
