Sahar
Architecture, Health Care Design
*KSU: Kent State University

① What do you do now?
② Why did you decide major in Health Care Design?
③ Why did you decide to come to the United States?
④ Why do you like to have own office?

①What do you do now? I mean you said you are master students and also assistant student.

I’m research assistant here. I work in university 20 hours a week. I do some research on my adviser’s projects. They pay my tuition. I don’t have to pay any tuition. So my tuition is waived and they give me money.

- So you mainly study as master student and work. Are you enjoying your study?

Yeah. it’s hard and busy, but kind of fun. It’s my second language, so everything is new challenge for me.

②Why did you decide to major in *Health Care Design?

It's my second master, but in my first master, I worked on designing for old people, but there are not enough information. Most of them are translated from other language and I found that we need this. And why I chose this major is designing health care design is really complicated, so it’s kind of challenge. I like that. And in health care you will answer exact needs compare to residential building.
*Health Care Design:

-You mean you can really help people in Health Care Design.
Exactly.

③Why did you decide to come to the United States?

We don’t have the health care design major in Iran. If you want to be architects who can design these building like hospital, you have to work as a general architect, for example, for 20 years. It needs these huge experiences. But if you come here and get degree of health care design and become a specialist in designing this kind of building, if you go back to Iran, you can be one of the designers. It will not take these long times, for example, 5 or 6 years.
But another reason is that I wanted to see what’s going on lol. I mean where is the United States. I wanted to talk and have classes with other nationalities to become familiar their culture, and the United States is, in universities and technologies, number 1, some kind of lol. And actually in health care, they are good because it’s very big country and it has 300 millions people, so there has to be a lot of hospital and they also have money, so architects here have a lot of experience. So if you come here, you can work with them and learn something, but in my country, they don’t have this amount of money and hospitals. We have this kind of problem. My country’s concern is not about hospitals, so maybe I can’t get these experiences we can get here in my country.
They also don’t have enough job for these kinds of things. For example, the farm that has these projects like hospitals. I’m not sure if I can work at that farm because they don’t have enough jobs and money to pay. Actually my country has economy problems. And there are a lot of graduate students, so they don’t have enough job.

-So you mean you can experience many things in the United States that you can’t in your country.

Yes. In the United States, they give a lot of money to health care relating things. For example, government. Our problems are we don’t have enough hospitals, and aging care emergency department, and in future we will need that because whole generations are getting old. It seems health care projects are money making in here.

And the United States has a lot of money. If you want to compare with Europe or Canada or Australia, they are working health cares, but they cannot compete the United States. So if you really want to get some experience in designing, I think here you will have more chances. And also the United States has wide land and population.

-You have own office, right?
Yes. But most of our projects are resident hall, interior design and shops.

④Why do you like to have own office?

I don’t think I’m that kind of person working for another person for so many years. I don’t like to have boss for so many years. I want to have boss up to time that I have to learn from them. After that you have to experience your own design strategy, not theirs.
I think our office work on interior design now, but when I go back to Iran, I want to have some health care projects. So in future I have to open another office for these purpose.

-So do you like to work on both? I mean interior and health care.

Yeah. It’s my dream. I don’t know future, but after finishing my master, I prefer to work at here and get some experience and then go back to my country.

⑤What is an important thing to enjoy life for you?

After I do my best for anything, I’d like to see reward of that. It makes me happy. It can be language, or career or anything. When I see the reward, I think it deserves that.
And I don’t like just study, just work. I want to have fun. So here because it’s small city, besides school and work, I go to cinema, my friend’s houses and go to bar. I mean I don’t want to be here just for study because life is going and now I’m 30 years old so… lol
It’s no time in future. If you say that, okay… today I have to work. okay… tomorrow I have to work. Every day you have to work. It’s better to not postpone anything to future. I like this kind of lifestyle. To do all things. Not postpone into future.

Thank you so much, Sahar!!
