Kyoto Diary #6 Gion


Hello, It's Teacher Asuka. Today, I'm going to show you some photos around Gion area. It was in June, 2017.

Have you ever been to Gion in Kyoto? Do you know where the below picture is?

Yasaka Jinjya-Shrine

....Yes, it's Yasaka Jinjya-Shrine which is located in the end of the Kawaramachi-dori street, Kyoto. Moreover, this Shrine is very famous for its great festival called 'Gion-Matsuri festival every July.

Many people will come and visit this shrine all the time because of easy accsess from the Hankyu Railway Kawaramachi, terminal station.

'Mai-den', Yasaka Jinjya -Shrine

This is the place called 'Mai-den' which is located in front of the 'Hon-den', Main Shrine. Ancient court music and dance for all the gods and goddesses is usually held at the 'Mai-den'. (a photo above)

You can see this kinds of old-fashioned Japanese restaurants, shops and houses around this area.

'Inuyarai' -a wooden fence

You can also see this kinds of the wooden-style unique arch in Kyoto. Do you know what it is? It's called 'Inuyarai' -a wooden fence or barrier which is set in front of the street because of refraining from splash of the mud of horse, or the dog's pee. This is a kind of wit in the ancient times in Kyoto.
