What are Bowlegs (O-legs) and Knock Knees (X-legs)? Reasons to Improve and Their Benefits

I know my legs are misaligned, but I’m not quite sure whether they’re bow-legged (O-leg) or knock-kneed (X-leg).

Since it’s a bit hard to tell, take your time and compare your own legs as you read.

So, today, I’d like to talk about "O-legs" and "X-legs."

Many of you may have heard these terms before, but I will first explain in detail what exactly they refer to and why it is important to correct them.

First, let's talk about "O-legs."

O-legs refer to a condition where the knees bow outward, creating a gap between them when standing with the feet together. The legs appear in the shape of the letter "O," which is why this condition is called "O-legs." It is particularly common among Japanese women.

People with O-legs often experience not only visual concerns but also excessive tension in the inner thigh muscles (adductor muscles). This imbalance in the muscles causes the knees to bow outward, making the legs appear curved.

In this context, "tension" refers to a state where the muscles are being stretched and feel tight.

What about X-legs?

Next, let's talk about "X-legs." In contrast, X-legs are a condition where the knees bend inward. When standing with the feet together, the knees touch, but there is a wide gap between the ankles.

The name comes from the fact that the legs appear in the shape of the letter

X-shaped legs (knock-knees) are less common than O-shaped legs (bowlegs), but they are caused by pelvic misalignment or habitual use of certain muscles in specific ways.

When the muscles on the outside of the hips become weak or the muscles on the inside become stiff, the knees tend to collapse inward, resulting in X-shaped legs.

Reasons and Benefits of Improvement

So, why is it necessary to correct O-shaped or X-shaped legs? There are several reasons for this.

If the condition of O-shaped or X-shaped legs persists, it puts extra strain on the knees and lower back. When the knees are out of their proper alignment, an unnatural force is applied to the joints with every step, which can lead to knee osteoarthritis, ligament injuries, and lower back pain.

O-shaped or X-shaped legs can also be a concern for aesthetic reasons. In the case of O-shaped legs, for example, there is a gap on the inside of the legs, making them appear curved when wearing skirts or tight pants.

For X-shaped legs, the knees appear to be closer together, which can make the overall silhouette look unbalanced. However, these conditions can be improved by exercises that balance the muscles and correct posture!

Correcting O-shaped or X-shaped legs not only improves the shape of the legs but also contributes to the overall balance of the body. Walking or standing with the correct posture makes energy consumption more efficient, making daily life more comfortable.
