Vol.7 What is Nijushi Sekki(二十四節気)？

皆さんご存じのように、日本には「四季」があります。
春夏秋冬それぞれに自然が移り変わり、いろんな風景を見ることができます。

Hi, it's Yuko. As you know we have "four seasons" in Japan. Nature changes by Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter and we can enjoy various scenery.

「四季」が春夏秋冬というのは有名ですが、実はもっと細かく季節を分ける言葉があるのを、皆さんはご存じですか？
なんと、24もの季節に分類されています。
その季節を表す言葉をまとめて「二十四節気（にじゅうしせっき）」と呼びます。

It's common that "four seasons" are spring, summer, autumn and winter but do you know there is a way to count in smaller seasons. Well, it's classified into 24 seasons! It's called "Nijushi sekki(二十四節気)".

二十四節気のスタートは2月4日の「立春」です。
この立春から春がスタートして、
立春から立夏→春　　立夏から立秋→夏　　立秋から立冬→秋　　立冬から立春→冬となります。
この季節の中日に春分、夏至、秋分、冬至という節目があります。
この8つの季節を「八節」と言います。

Nijushi sekki starts on 4th Feb, "Risshun". Spring starts at this risshun then, Risshun ~ Rikka →Spring
Rikka ~ Risshu →Summer
Risshu ~ Ritto　→Autumn
Ritto ~ Risshun →Winter

And there are Shunbun, Geshi, Shubun and Touji in each seasons. So now we have 8, which is called Hachisetsu.

現在日本では、春分と秋分は祝日になっています。
春分と秋分は昼と夜の時間が同時間、夏至は1年で1番日照時間が長い日、冬至は1年で1番日照時間が短い日とされています。
さらに八節の間にそれぞれ2つずつ節気が入り、全部で24となります。

It's currently national holiday on Shunbun and Shubun in Japan.
On Shunbun and Shubun, the daytime and the nighttime are same duration. On Geshi it's the longest sunshine hours and on Toji it's the shortest sunshine hours. Two more setsu (short season) fall between each hachisetsu, then we have now 24.

季節を表す言葉にもそれぞれ意味があります。
例えば3月6日頃の「啓蟄（けいちつ）」は、大地が温まり冬眠していた虫が穴から出てくる頃、という意味。
10月8日頃の「寒露（かんろ）」は、露が冷気に当たって凍りそうになる頃、という意味です。

Each season has its meanings.
For example, "Keichitsu" on 6th of March means it's time for that the land gets warmer and hibernating insect comes out from the holes.
"Kanro" on 8th of Oct means it's time for that dew gets freezon by very cold air.

今の時期は「清明（せいめい」で、全てがすがすがしく明るく美しい頃。
様々な花が咲き乱れ、お花見などが見ごろの時期。
ぴったりですね！

Now it's "Seimei" and it's time for that everything is fresh, bright and beautiful.  Various flowers are in full bloom. Exactly!!
