However, the project of Sagrada Familia was started in 1826 under the supervision of architect Francisco de Paul del Villar. The story begins when he resigned in 1827 and Antoni Gaudi took the charge. Gaudi was so ambitious with the project that he devoted 40 years of life in the building of the Sagrada Familia and buried in the crypt after he died. When Gaudi died in 1926, only 25% of the church was completed. The later construction work follows the plans and designs left by Gaudi after his death.

Gaudi always believed in devotion to the holy family and he believed that no man made structure should exceeds nature.

After completion, it will have 18 towers, each of which has its specific meanings. The twelve smaller towers represent the disciples, four of the towers represent the evangelists, one of the tower represents the Virgin Mary, and a pinnacle tower is dedicated to Jesus Christ.

The most common entrance to the church is through the native facade. This was the only facade which was completed under the supervision of Antoni Gaudi himself. This facade features various sculptures and devoted to the birth of Jesus Christ. There are two pillars at the native facade side. The bottom of the pillars features the tortoise and turtle which represents the sea and the land.
