スタバが変えた私の読書習慣 Starbucks shifted my reading habit

今日は私が洋書にはまったきっかけを少し。
20代の頃は主に小説を読んでいました。洋書もいわゆる恋愛小説を読むことが多かったです。当時は家の近くのブックオフに洋書がたくさんあって、ある日そこでスターバックスの前CEOが書いた"Pour Your Heart Into It"（スターバックス成功物語）をなんとなく買ったんです。

When I was in my 20s, a significant portion of my bookshelves was novels written in both Japanese and English. Many foreign books of them were rom-com as they were easy to read and suited for vacation reading. At that time, there was a second-hand book store in my neighborhood,  and it offered some English books too. I loved looking for something intriguing there, and that's how I met "Pour Your Heart Into It," written by Howard Schultz, a former CEO of Starbucks Corporation.

ハワード・シュルツは決して裕福な家庭に生まれたわけではなく、ニューヨークで営業マンをしていて、偶然シアトルのコーヒー店を知るんですよね。そこですっかり入れ込んで、西海岸に引っ越して本格的にスターバックスとして事業を拡大していくという。

Born to Jewish parents in New York, his childhood was not wealthy. He had tried to be successful being a sales rep on the east coast,  but once he has met a coffee shop in Seatle, he fell head over heels for the dark roasted coffee. Since then, his life has revolved around Starbucks expanding the business and nurturing new coffee culture in the U.S.

彼のCEOとしての旅路には多くの障害があるわけですが、とにかくハワードはパワフルで、常にスターバックスの価値を広めるという熱意にひたむきで。当時自分の仕事にそこまで情熱がなかった私は、この本にずいぶん心動かされました。その後働きながら大学に戻ったのも、彼の影響もあったような気がします。

All the journeys told in the book moved me deeply at that time. His life as a business owner was rife with obstacles, but he has always focused on his passion and mission to convey the value of Starbucks to the world. That consistency seemed almost unrealistic for me. 
I was already working for an American firm back then, but I wasn't passionate about my job and finding something I could pour my heart into was my long overdue task. One of the reasons I went back to college while working as a full-time employee was obviously influence by his energy to make the most of his life.

いわゆるビジネス本って、1つの核となるアイディアを説明するものが多いと思うのですが、ハワードみたいな人の本を読むと、もう必要なことが全部書いてある気がするんです。"Pour Your Heart Into It"は私にとってバイブルのような存在になって、その後も小説よりは自伝や、リアルなストーリーを手に取ることが増えました。
たぶん1番良かった本を聞かれたら、この他では"SHOE DOG"や"Becoming"なんかを挙げる気がします。

Most of the time, "business" books have one core idea to cater to, such as being innovative, consistent, and aware of the market dynamics. It seems like those new ideas are generated every year to inspire people, but when you look into someone's success story, you can see all of the key elements there. "Pour Your Heart Into It" became such a bible for me to keep working hard without losing my focus and be true to myself. 
After finishing his book, my favorite genre has shifted from rom-com to biography, fiction to real-life business. To this day, if I'm asked about my best reading experiences, I would name something real, such as "SHOE DOG" and "Becoming," in addition to this one.
