Owls in Hokkaido

お土産物屋さんから戻ってきたお客さんからの質問。
「どうしてフクロウのお土産がたくさんあるの？」
日本人のお客さんからまず出てこない質問ですね。
さあどう答えましょうか。

When my guest came back from a souvenir shop, he asked me
“Why are so many owl carvings sold at souvenir shops ?”
I never heard such a question from Japanese tourists.
How could I answer ?

「フクロウは村の守り神として、アイヌの人たちにあがめられている鳥です。
それから日本人にとってもフクロウは縁起のいい鳥です。
なぜかというとフクロウは、『ふ・くろう』とも読め、「No trouble」を意味します。
トラブルなく戻ってこられる縁起のいいお土産として人気があるのです」

Owls are worshiped by Ainu people because they are thought as guardians of Ainu villages.
And they are also auspicious birds for Japanese people who live in mainland Japan.
Because owls are called “fukurou” in Japanese, and that can read fu-kurou, means “no trouble” in Japanese. Owl carvings are popular as a lucky item meaning people can come back with no troubles.

お客さんは納得してくれました。
その後、お客様が買い物に行く前にこの話をすると、フクロウのグッズを買ってくるお客様が何人も見受けられるようになりました。ガイドの話の影響は大きいですね。

He was satisfied with my answer.
After this day, I told this story before my guests go shopping, and some people buy owl goods as souvenirs.
Guide talk has a great influence.

ちなみに北海道には、シマフクロウという北海道にしかいない絶滅危惧種のフクロウがいます。道東でしか見られない鳥です。そのフクロウを見るためだけに道東を訪れる人もいます。

By the way, there are endangered owls called Shima-fukurou or Blakiston fish Owls in Hokkaido.
They are only seen in eartern Hokkaido. Some people come to eaetern Hokkaido just to see the owls.

北海道の先住民族アイヌの伝承では、フクロウは「コタンコロカムイ」と呼ばれ、村を守る守り神であるとともに猟の時にクマの居場所を教えてくれるありがたい鳥でもあるそうです。阿寒のアイヌコタンの入り口には、大きなフクロウの彫刻のついた門があります。それは村のシンボルです。
今も昔も北海道の人々にとってフクロウは大切な鳥なのですね。

The Ainu, Hokkaido indigenous people’s folklore, owls are called “kotankoro-kamui” which means guardian of the village. And they are helpful birds when Ainu engage in bear hunting, they tell a place where bears are.
There is a big owl carving at the entrance gate of Ainu Kotan or Ainu village in Akan.It’s a symbol of the village.
From ancient times to nowadays, owls are important birds for Hokkaido people.
