田中正造伝記41(日本語と英語)

当初、田中正造は農民たちを実力行使させないために、何度も説得していました。

それは、実力行使したらどんな目に遭わされるか正造自身が身をもって経験していたからです。
また、不完全とはいえ、近代化で日本が法治国家となった以上、問題の解決は代議士が政府に働きかけるべきである、との思いもありました。
始めの頃は、農民たちも正造の説得に応じたし、また、帝国議会で政府に対して徹底的に鉱毒被害を訴える姿に
「田中先生はわしらの味方だ。」との思いもあった事でしょう。
しかし、日清戦争を支持した事。
そして10年間代議士をして結果を出していなかった事。
さらに所属した憲政本党からも三くだり半を突きつけられた事。
これらが農民たちをして田中正造を頼りにならぬ者の烙印を押させる事になりました。
川俣事件に対する政府の対応はあまりにも乱暴なものでした。180人の警官隊を派遣して、当時携帯していたサーベルの柄や石をくるんだ手ぬぐいで農民たちを殴打し、2000人のうち
100人が逮捕され、
15人が裁判にかけられました。

正造は考えました。
「ここまで追い詰められた被害民の
行動をどうして止められようか？
私自身も国に対する絶望の気持ちしかない。
被害民を弾圧するのはゆるせぬ。
次の議会で徹底的に追及する。」

正造、この時60歳。

Initially,Shozo Tanaka tried repeatedly to persuade the farmers not to use force.

This was because Shozo himself had firsthand experience of what they  would be subjected to if they used force.
He also felt that since Japan had become a nation governed by the rule of law through modernization,albeit imperfectly,the deputies should work with the government to solve problems.
In the beginning,the farmers agreed with Shozo's persuasion, and Shozo was also seen appealing to the government at the Imperial Diet about the damage caused by mining poisoning, farmers must have felt that "Mr. Tanaka is on our side ".

However,that he supported the Sino-japanese War.
Also,he had been a delegate for 10 years and he had not produced results.
In addition,The Kensei-Honto to which he belonged also gave him a letter of divorce.
These factors led the farmers to brand Shozo Tanaka as unreliable.

The Meiji-Government's response to the Kawamata Incident was too violent.
The government dispatched 180 police officers, then they beated the farmers with saber hilts and hand towels wrapped with stones, which they were carrying at that time.
As a results,100 of the 2,000 farmers were arrested and 15 were brought to trial.

Shozo thought about it.
"There is no stopping the actions of the victims who have been cornered to this point.
Also, I myself feel nothing but despair for the country.
I will not allow the oppression of the victims.
I will thoroughly pursue this issue in the next Congress."

Shozo was 60 years old at this time.
