The Joy of Simple Play: A Lesson in Parenting from Tomica Toys

Yesterday, I bought three amazing and joyful Tomica toys for my son. I’ve been constantly on the lookout for toys that would capture his interest, scouring flea markets and online platforms. Even though most of the toys sold there are second-hand, the prices are quite reasonable, which makes it easier to indulge in these purchases without worrying too much about cost. Toddlers are notorious for quickly losing interest in toys after playing with them repeatedly for a short period. Understanding this, I decided to focus on buying used toys for him, reserving brand-new purchases for special occasions like his birthday or Christmas.

Lately, I’ve observed that my son has developed a keen interest in the Tomica series, which initially surprised me. I had always thought of Tomica as a toy line more appropriate for children younger than him, given its simplicity. My usual approach to buying toys has been to choose those that encourage rational thinking and problem-solving, as I believe these types of toys play a crucial role in intellectual development. And indeed, my son has seemed quite content with the intellectually stimulating toys I’ve selected for him so far.

However, when my son opened the package containing the Tomica toys, his face lit up with pure joy, and a broad smile spread across his face, stretching from ear to ear. It was in that moment that I realized something profound: what my son truly desires isn’t always about intellectual stimulation or educational value. Sometimes, he just wants to have fun, to experience the simple joys of childhood with toys that allow him to immerse himself in play without any complex triggers or educational expectations.

This experience has been a valuable lesson for me as a parent. While it’s important to provide toys that stimulate his mind and encourage learning, it’s equally important to recognize his need for pure, unadulterated fun. As the person who shares the most intimate relationship with him, I must balance his intellectual development with his emotional and playful needs. In doing so, I’m not only nurturing his mind but also his heart, ensuring he enjoys a well-rounded and happy childhood.

This simple purchase of second-hand toys taught me that as much as I want to guide my son towards learning and growth, I also need to respect and cherish his natural inclination towards joy and play.
Being a parent means understanding that children, especially at such a tender age, find happiness in the simplest things. And sometimes, the greatest gift we can give them is the freedom to just be kids.
